Back in September, we released a Potterworld Announcement that outlined 4 key goals for the server. Since then, 1.18 has been released with great success thanks to the development team, our halloween and winter waltz events have taken place, and we’ve revamped the levelling system following player feedback. The First Year Experience will also be brought back to the main world over the coming months. With the progress that has been made, and more events in the pipeline, it is time to take Potterworld 2.0 off the shelf and bring it back into focus.
Potterworld 2.0
1.18 has brought a huge number of possibilities to the server for our textures, builds, tech, and more. Fundamental components of Minecraft have been upgraded and we want to make use of these in delivering the best gameplay that we can. In order to do this, we have to look at every aspect of our world map in its current state and review opportunities to upgrade it. Potterworld 2.0 will no longer be the Directium update, but will instead take a different approach so that we can make use of the new features available through 1.18. The artworker team has already been hard at work creating hundreds of new models, with more on the way. Using these new textures, the build team will be able to upgrade all areas of our map with new textures, new terrain (due to minecraft’s increased build height) and more variety. Finally, the Game Design team will be able to upgrade the tech throughout our world with the help of the development team’s work in creating new 1.18 tools. This process has already started, but it does take time. This is why we’re planning to focus on smaller sections of our map and release them as and when they are ready.
The first region that we are already working through is the area surrounding Hogsworth and Hogsend. We will also look at areas of London alongside these to provide a complete experience. When these are ready, these will be released as the start of Potterworld 2.0. Within this region, players will be able to progress completely from newcomer to graduate using our new systems. The following regions will provide fully redesigned “subjects” (previously known as professions) with new recipes, progression and rewards, new quests and a new achievement system, and more! We will focus on one region at a time to ensure each region gets the same attention.
Possibilities of 1.18
The upgrade to 1.18 has enabled new types of block models for us to use in making our texture pack more detailed, without the previous entity lag. Some areas have been used to experiment with these models already, and the result is a big improvement over the previous minecraft version:

We will be reviewing all of our existing builds to upgrade them with these new models, and enhance the environments within the server. With the range of new models, this opens the door to enhanced professions too.
Professions have been around for many years, and it’s a big area that we hear about in player feedback. So far, we’ve developed prototypes for herbology and potions, as shown below.

There’s a lot of exciting things that can come out of these changes, but another key area to look at with 1.18 is our mobs. In 1.18, Minecraft can now handle custom mob animations for movement, attack, damage and more. This enables us to breathe some life into our mobs which, until now, have behaved much like vanilla minecraft mobs in their movement.

Unlike the current system, some of these mobs won’t be wanting to fight you. We’re finally adding a care of magical creatures system that allows you to tame creatures from various regions.
Once we have this groundwork laid, we will then turn our focus to updating our quests to make use of these systems to complete the upgraded Region 1.
Summary
There’s a lot to do, and we’re really excited to have the chance to experiment with such a wide range of new opportunities for the server. These new abilities fundamentally upgrade gameplay for the server, which is why we have chosen now as the time to get stuck in and review our entire world. It will take time, but it will be worth it and we hope you’re as excited as us to see these features come to life! We’ll keep you updated as we progress, and we’d love to hear your thoughts!
