Department Updates - September
Feature
Edited by Silquer

Hello, my dear readers, and welcome back to the Daily Diviner! This month, three departments have lots to share. Read on to hear from the departments about the Autumn Hub, Wizencouncil merge, Store updates, and more!

Build - Autumn Hub, Hogsend, and More!

We’ve recently completed the Autumn Hub, which is the final hub in the series! We had a lot of support with this hub, with each section having a Builder working on different ideas to help bring everything together. We also had some extra help from other Builders along the way, which helped bring our hub to life! This hub included our signature Butterbrew event, our Halloween event, and a brand new event, which will be seen next year in 2027!

We’re continuing our focus on 2.0, with Hogsend making rapid progress over the last couple of months. We’re finally wrapping up the interiors, bringing the project closer to completion, while Hogsworth continues to progress alongside it!

We are currently working on a small collection of Academics & Arena lobbies that we will see once our 2.0 update is released! We’re also working on a new Potions classroom to go along with our new Potions system.

Community Management - Busy Wizencouncilling

Within the last month, we completed the merge of our Wizencouncil team with the Poltergeist team, creating a single team for forum support and suggestion tracking.

We've added 189 suggestions, both old and new, to our new tracking system. This captures all suggestions that have been made in the past month, any that have been put on hold over the past several years, and any that were still awaiting decisions from years gone by. Of these 189, we only have 14 suggestions left to get updated decisions from the relevant departments to share with you all!

We're now tracking internal targets for every suggestion put on hold, and will be following up with the relevant teams to check progress against these targets. After we clear the remaining backlog, we're turning to more ways of gathering player feedback - either through feedback forms or general conversations on Discord and in-game!

Other than Wizencouncil, we've been continuing to moderate and help players on all of our platforms! We're busy at work on the next few expeditions, with a brand new circus Expedition set to debut in November! We will also be bringing back last year's Halloween Expedition in October.

Media - Continued Creative Work & Many New Team Members

The Store team started the month with the thrilling Dungeon Store Releases, introducing The Serpentine Staff, Serpentine Broom, Candle Crown, and two new bundles! We also worked on some minor quality-of-life improvements in the In-Game Store. We are currently working on implementing the next store release, which will be focused around a very, very popular theme on the server!

The Arithmancer teams have also continued working on various graphics, renders, and skins for our upcoming releases. The Skin Arithmancers have also been working hard on completing skins for the next event!

Our WizNetworkers have also begun brainstorming some ideas to show and promote various aspects of the server!

Media has grown in size a lot this month with one new DD Editor, two new WizNetworkers, and a returning Skin Arithmancer. We are super excited to see what they will create for the server!

Are you interested in creating creative content for the server too? Be sure to check out our Media applications in the Applications tab here on the website!

Thank you to the departments for sharing their work this month! Be sure to look for next month’s feature updates.

Interviewing the New Assistant to Head of Build CraftyKanna
Editorial
Written by Silquer
Edited by LMNJ

Hello, my dear readers, and welcome back to the Editorial column of the Daily Diviner! It was recently announced that the Build department has a new Assistant to Head: CraftyKanna! Kanna has been part of the Build department since 2021 and has worked on many projects since then, clearly showing herself as a dedicated member of the team! I had the pleasure of speaking with Kanna about her experience on the Build team and what her new role entails.

What does the build process look like for you? What are the steps you and the team take to bring a project all the way to completion?
Kanna: Normally, I always start by laying out a floor plan for whatever build I'm working on using wool. This can be for either interiors or exteriors. When wool doesn't work for a certain detail or space, I'll start replacing it with the actual materials as I work.

Getting a project all the way to completion is also a lot about teamwork and support. The Build Team does some of its best work when we're all in voice calls together. If someone is struggling with an area, we'll all head over to help them come up with ideas. Then we'll go back to our own parts of the build and keep working.

Out of the many projects you’ve worked on, which has been most rewarding for you, and why?
Kanna: I've worked on so many projects, but I think the ones I've been most proud of and enjoyed the most have been Castelomagia and the Event Hubs.

Castelomagia is special to me because that's where I really fell in love with building terrain. The Event Hubs also because I helped with all four of them in some way, with some more than others. They were mentally very difficult to complete, so finally getting to the end of them all together made it feel even more rewarding.

Now that you’ve been in this role for over a month, how would you say your new position has changed your role in the team?
Kanna: Honestly, not as much as you'd think! You get a lot of new perms and access, but no matter what role I'm in, I still get to build and support my people. I think no matter what position I'm in, I'll always love doing that.

I also get to help Jake a lot more now, which has been really nice. He's had a lot on his plate before I became a Lead. Even with taking on some of that extra work for him, I still get to just build.

Are there any upcoming projects you can share with players?
Kanna: I think I'm most excited about the 2.0 of Hogsend! I started to really take on a leadership role in it about halfway through the project, and I've done over 26 interiors within the revamped town.

I'm really excited to show people more of my work and all the effort our team has put into Hogsend over the last few months. There's been a lot of work put into it, and I'm really excited for everyone to finally get to see it!

Thank you to Kanna for taking the time to share her experience! The Build team could not be in better hands, and it sounds like exciting things are in the works. I wish Kanna and the Build department all the best!

Butterbrew Companions
Lifestyle

Yawn.

“Clarence? Did you get any sleep last night?” Janet murmurs as she adjusts her scarf.

“No… I was too excited for this trip. The Butterbrew yearly event is my favorite time of the year!” Clarence says sheepishly.

“Well, hopefully you can keep up with me.” She teases, tugging her Serpent cloak on.

The two walk into Hogsend before being stopped by an event organizer.

“Hi there! You two ready to be assigned to the HQ you’ll be helping out with?” The man asks as he grabs two pages from a binder.

He hands Janet a purple paper labeled ‘Witching Hour’ while Clarence is given a green paper labeled Bloomsbury Batch. The man leaves with a smile.

“Oh no! He put us in two different groups!” Clarence exclaims, frowning dramatically.

“That’s alright... We’ll just have to meet up later, you know, after we’ve both helped out.” Janet says and gives him a quick hug. “See ya later, Foodle-doodle.” Clarence’s lips quirk into a grin–Janet always made his last name sound silly when he was sad.

The two depart and go to their respective groups.

Clarence walks to a shop set up in front of the Broomsticks Inn and notices a small student bouncing on their heels.

“Hey there, is this the Bloomsbury Headquarters?” Clarence asks a fellow Honeybadger.

“Oh, hello, it is.” The student shares, beaming at Clarence. “Oh, by the way, I’m Nectar Greene, and I’m a second year! I think I’ve seen you around the common room.”

“I’m Clarence Foodle, sixth year. I really like your name.” He murmurs, grinning.

“Have you tried any of the food this year? I’ve already been to a few food stalls, and I tried the freshly baked sausage with a nice cold cream soda.” Nectar mentions as they dig through their bag, pulling out a piece of fudge. “Here, try this. It’s butterbrew fudge.”

Clarence takes the fudge and eats it. “Oh, wow, that’s even better than last year’s fudge, thanks! Last year, I had some of the butterscotch they were selling–it tastes amazing with freshly brewed Butterbrew.”

The two share the fudge as they wait for the chief of Bloomsbury to come out.

“I hope they have the ice caves open this year. I heard it’s really cold in there!” Nectar jumps, clearly excited.

“If you’re excited about that, I think you’ll be ecstatic about Fiona’s glass-making course! I made a mug one time out of sand and amethyst.” Clarence giggles and marks where it is on Nectar’s map of Hogsend.

“That’s where Fiona is set up.” Clarence points.

“Thanks, Clarence!” Nectar grins widely. “Oh–it’s starting, look-” They point to where a man is standing.

“Hey there, everyone! I am Hansel Hops, Chief Brewing Officer of Bloomsbury Batch–the best brewery of Britain… or we will be once we win this little competition.” Hansel states, walking around the group of students and other festival-goers, handing each one an envelope.

Clarence peeks inside, and it is a recipe.

“In your envelope, you’ll find our secret recipe. Please try not to lose it or share it with our enemies–I mean… with any of the other competition.” Hansel coughs, clearly shaking off his emotions and returning to his smiling and chipper self.

“Alright everyone. Let’s head over to these cauldrons over here and start on the signature Bloomsbury Batch Butterbrew.” Hansel says, leading the group to a set of cauldrons. Clarence and Nectar share a cauldron, guiding each other as they make the Butterbrew.

After finishing, they taste test the brew. “Oh wow! It’s even better than I imagined it would be. Can we take some extra for my friend?” Clarence looks at Hansel hopefully.

“Of course! As long as your friend doesn’t share it with anyone else.” Hansel replies, narrowing his eyes.

Clarence and Nectar head to the Broomsticks Inn where Janet is already waiting.

“Janet! Janet! Try our Butterbrew!” Clarence hands her the drink. Janet pulls out her own jar of Butterbrew.

“Okay, but you gotta try mine too.” She declares, and offers the jar to Nectar. The three taste test the two Butterbrews.

“Oh my gosh… I think Witching Hour Butterbrew might be better than the Bloomsbury Batch Butterbrew!” Nectar whispers, looking conflicted.

“That’s alright, Nectar. Even if we’re on Team Bloomsbury, we should be honest. The Witching Hour Butterbrew is definitely better.” Clarence admits.

“Well… I guess we’ll find out who has the better Butterbrew once the festival ends.” Janet says, grinning with confidence.

A ringing bell sounds throughout.

“Oh. We gotta head back to Hogsworth already?” Nectar pouts disappointedly.

“Aw man…” Janet frowns.

“Don’t worry guys! We’ll be able to come back next weekend and do everything else we missed.” Clarence states.

“We?” Nectar points out hopefully, noticing Clarence was involving them in plans.

“Of course! You’re one of us now, Nectar.” Clarence says and Janet quickly nods.

The three return to Hogsworth, giggling while planning for the next weekend.

A Glimpse Into The Magic
Staff Highlights
Written by autumnngrace
Edited by gospojken

Hello, lovely witches and wizards of Potterworld. In this month's Staff Highlights, we will be interviewing a few dedicated members of the team and delving behind the scenes into their history on Potterworld. It is a great joy to have the opportunity to give you these interviews. With that being said, here are their stories!

How long have you been on the staff team?
M_Engel: I have been on the staff team since September 2022.

zZalt: I’ve been on the staff team since November 2021. (Does that count as old?)

yakko__: I have been on the staff team for about three years.

What made you interested in joining the staff team?
M_Engel: Before joining the staff team, I used to report a few bugs either through tickets in-game or via the bug forum on our website. Since the community was and is so friendly, and I got to know a lot of staff members, I decided to try my luck in joining as a Grounds Keeper.

zZalt: I have always liked making skins, and I’ve been on PW since 2015, so I thought I’d combine the two and join the team. I also really wanted a cute role LMAO.

yakko__: Basically, the second I saw that the Daily Diviner had applications open for writers, I was hooked. I’ve always loved writing, and Potterworld with all its lore seemed like such a wonderful place to play around in!

What are your current staff roles?
M_Engel: My current staff roles are Sr. Grounds Keeper and 3D Arithmancer.

zZalt: I’m a Skin Arithmancer.

yakko__: I'm a writer for the Daily Diviner.

What type of work do you do in your positions?
M_Engel: My positions work more back-end, where students don't interact with us often, unless through bug reporting or questions. For Grounds Keepers, we usually test new content (events, expeditions, classes) before it is released to the public by reporting bugs to the team in question. Outside of that, we log bugs that are reported by students or staff members. We can test it to make sure it is fixed or still needs fixing. Since I am in a Senior position, I need to make sure the bugs we reported for the content are fixed.

As for 3D arithmancer, we make the renders for several places, such as for the web store and posts for the Daily Diviner or on social networks. Then it is delivered to the 2D Arithmancers.

zZalt: I basically just make skins lol, but it also involves some character design elements since the prompts sometimes leave a lot of creative choices to the Arithmancer.

yakko__: For every new issue, once I’m assigned an article, I write and submit an outline. Depending on the article type, these can be very bare-bones, or they can be nearly an entire article on their own! Once the outline is approved, I go ahead and write. Some articles allow for a lot of creative liberty, though plenty require researching certain lore details or exploring in-game locations to portray them accurately. After writing, I submit the article for editing comments, make any edits that are needed, and then my role is finished for that issue!

How much time do you approximately spend on your staff responsibilities each week?
M_Engel: I would say I do not have a fixed schedule/time because it depends on how busy the weeks are and if my IRL activity is busy or not. However, I typically save at least 5 hours and up to 9 hours per week. Sometimes it can be more hours.

zZalt: It all depends; it’s a very event-based position, as most skins are made for events. I’ve also done this for so long that I can make a batch of skins rather quickly. But I’d say I might spend 3-4 hours per event. Sometimes more, sometimes less. (I kinda squish it all together so I don’t work every week.)

yakko__: When I’m writing an article, I usually spend between one to four hours a week on them. Sometimes writer’s block gets in the way, sometimes an article comes out practically perfect on the first try.

What do you enjoy the most about your roles?
M_Engel: For Grounds Keeper, trying the content before release is always a pleasure, especially when we find bugs that can break the experience. You would be surprised how many bugs we have found before being released. After the content is released, I can help my friends and students who might get stuck or make a bug report; I usually understand and can help them.

As for 3D Arithmancer, I think the creative process is what I enjoy the most, even with the limitations of the 3D.

zZalt: That it is a creative outlet. I’m about to finish my degree soon, so my days mostly consist of studying; having this as a break from all of that is really nice.

yakko__: My favorite aspect of writing for the Daily Diviner is how creatively fulfilling it can be. The articles I love to write the most are the ones written from interesting character perspectives about little snippets of the server’s world that really flesh it out.

What do you find most challenging with your roles?
M_Engel: For both positions, what I find most challenging is the workflow that can be inconsistent. One month we barely have anything to test and barely any bugs being logged; the other month is the opposite.

On the Grounds Keeper, when it is co-op/multiplayer, it can be tough to have any other Grounds Keeper members to help me since we have usually been a small team.

zZalt: The most challenging part is probably the character design element of it. You don’t want every skin to look the same and be boring lol.

yakko__: Personally (and a lot of other Writers can probably relate), the biggest challenge for me is DEADLINES! I often spend a lot of time thinking about writing, sometimes even more than I do actually writing, and lose track of when what’s supposed to be due. I like to think I’m getting the hang of it, though.

What is a favourite memory you have made during your time as a staff member?
M_Engel: When I have been a staff member, there are a lot of memories I have made, either on SAD, where I would do activities with my friends on the staff team and win tournaments with them too. But I probably will have to choose when I would do meetings with other Grounds Keepers, as we work together with a common goal.

zZalt: This is a hard one; most of my PW memories aren’t staff-related. But during the time I’ve been staff, I would say the time I, Ellie and Niko lost a Dueling challenge (or tournament idk) because we ended up killing each other instead of the other team.

yakko__: A favorite staff memory of mine is a bunch of us in Media getting together on Discord and watching a dummy player slot absolutely thrash all of us in a hunger games simulator. It was a dark day, but it was also very funny.

Is there anything more you would like to say to those reading this interview?
M_Engel: If you are interested in joining any of the positions, feel free to apply. I, as I am sure the rest of the team, would be more than happy to teach you. I know it can be scary at first, but we will do our best to make the experience as smooth as possible.

zZalt: Y’all should check out all the hot lumberjack skins I’ve made around the server. 🫪 (There are at least 3.)

yakko__: If you enjoy this issue of the Daily Diviner, please consider supporting us by checking out our other issues and telling your friends on the server about our paper. You, the readers, are an important part of this work!

As always, thank you for tuning in to this month’s Staff Highlights, and much love to the staff members who took time out of their day to be interviewed. Each of these members has done amazing things for the server, and I cannot wait to see what else they accomplish on the staff team!
