Friendsgiving 2020

Greetings everyone, and happy belated Thanksgiving to all those who celebrate! While Thanksgiving is traditionally a holiday meant to celebrate spending time with family and getting everyone together for the end-of-year holidays, for others, it can mean something else; the importance of spending time with your friends. This year more than ever, making meaningful connections with friends is essential to maintaining a healthy social balance. Whether you find your people online through games, social media or in-person, in this article we’ll be discussing both some safe ways that you can celebrate the holidays with each other this year, and bring in a few surprise guests to talk about their experiences with people on Potterworld!

Due to the current safety regulations in relation to spending time with your friends and family in person, I’ve compiled a short list of activities you can do completely online on Potterworld with your friends! You could try out a new mini-game that you’ve never played with a group of friends, or get into the fall spirit by attempting to complete all of the Halloween event quests before it closes! On a broader scale, exploring the map in its entirety and going through all the yearly quests with a group has to be more fun than going at them all alone. A few smaller activities could be playing hide and seek around the castle, grinding mobs together, or even just hanging out together in the courtyard. Overall, the possibilities available on Potterworld are nearly endless, so gather up a group and have some fun!

In the spirit of the holidays, I’ve brought in a few people to share their own personal experiences with friends on Potterworld! Today Thorlthunder (Kieran), JessicaTM, Joshios, SLGCurt (Courtney), and darkatspock have joined us to answer a few questions.

What is your best memory with your friends on Potterworld?

Kieran: My favorite memory is playing Star Wars: Domination with my friends and killing them.

Jessica: The time that my friends were all screaming at me because I was throwing myself into a fire is my favorite memory on the server.

Joshua: My best memory with my friends on Potterworld was when I first returned to the server. Everyone was so welcoming, and that is one of the major reasons I stayed. Overall, I'm glad I came back to the server because I got to share so many great moments with friends and players on the server.

Courtney: My favorite memory on Potterworld would have to be playing Hide and Seek a year ago and debating in the game who should get this one hiding spot in the Dark Follower Camp map. It fills me with such nostalgia when I think back to those moments.

Spock: My best memory with my friends from Potterworld would probably be 2017 Staff IRL Meet-Up. There was a water balloon fight scheduled, and I was filling the balloons... well... trying to. Before I could finish filling the water balloons, Werter had picked one up and threw it at someone. He soon got Droobledore involved and it was so chaotic but tons of fun! I was doing a decent job in avoiding water balloons until Droobledore caught me off guard while bringing towels outside and completely soaked me! It was such a wonderful time, and a memory I will never forget!

What are you grateful for this year?

Kieran: I’m grateful for being good-looking.

Jessica: I’m grateful for my chaotic friends.

Joshua: I am grateful for all of my friends and family this year. I've spent a lot of time on Potterworld, and it feels like home because of the awesome community. There are so many nice people I've met throughout the years, and it has improved my time on Potterworld.

Courtney: This year I'm grateful for all the new memories and friends I've made through Potterworld. Every single experience I have on this server has been positive -- I truly cannot think of a negative one. Everyone is so supportive, friendly, and overall just kind, and I can't even express how thankful I am. <3

Spock: I am grateful for the opportunity to rejoin the staff team! Since my return to the team I have made so many amazing memories! Everything from TBA's, to games of Among Us, to Bed Wars, to Roleplay Events! Even though this year has been so crazy, I am happy I was able to spend it with my friends from Potterworld!

I’m so glad that they could share their experiences with their friends on Potterworld! It just goes to show the powerful connections we can make online. In this current situation more than ever, it’s important to maintain those connections and spend quality time with your friends over the fall and winter holidays. I’d like to thank everyone willing to be interviewed and wish both them and everyone reading a happy Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving, or whatever you may celebrate at this time of year! I hope everyone, one time readers and Daily Diviner frequenters alike, stays safe, stays warm, and has an amazing end of 2020!

Ask the Experts Adventures!
Editorial
Written by: Melioraa
Edited by: MamaDuckie

Hello witches and wizards, and welcome back to the Daily Diviner’s editorial column! My name is Rani, and in today’s article we’ll be covering one of the newly released series on the Potterworld YouTube channel; Ask the Experts! With the amount of roles available on both the staff and non-staff teams, it's natural that people may become confused with their purposes. In order to combat this, a form was sent out on the 27th of August for members of the community to ask questions regarding said roles. They then turned their questions into a video, where members of those specific roles answered to the best of their abilities! In today’s article, we’ll be meeting and interviewing the incredible director who made this possible; Crestilia, better known as Sara. If you guys are ready, we’ll get straight into this.

First, I thought we’d ask Sara about her experiences learning about the different roles on the server. Despite being a member of the staff team herself, there would obviously be moments where she’d learn something new about the role while answering the questions of others. Let’s see what she had to say!

Q: Which Role did you like learning about the most?

Sara: I'd say that, even though Build hasn't been out yet, I liked learning about the Build department the most as I don't have much experience with building myself and I actually got to know some fun facts about the Build department through this project, such as how builders kind of specialize in certain areas within building, or how the initial version of Hogsworth took about one year to build. Especially with Revelius being released a while ago, I have gained even more respect for the builders for all the amazing towns they have built and I personally think that they did a great job at those.

Q: Which role did you overall enjoy the most?

Sara: For the most enjoyable role I'd say it's either any role in Community Management or Game Design as both of those departments have very different teams within them and there's a lot to discover about each and every one of them.

Moving on to the director's side of things, why not also Sara about her experience recording, filming and editing the Ask the Experts series.

Q: What was your favourite section to record?

Sara: I guess I didn't really have a favourite section to record. I had fun with all of the members and everyone was really nice to record with and I don't think I'll forget recording with everyone as I really loved working on this project.

Q: What was the most difficult section to record?

Sara: There wasn't necessarily a difficult part to record, because most of it went pretty much the same but just with different people all the time, and I'm glad everything went pretty well.

Q: What section took the longest to record?

Sara: That would probably be Tech & Dev as I had already planned out which departments would go first and which would go last, so it would take some time until Tech & Dev would release along with Build in the last video that's still yet to come as of now. I was less in a hurry with getting some of the recording done for those departments, but I just happened to finish Build sooner than Tech & Dev.

And with that, it brings us to the end of the article. I hope you all enjoyed reading about the behind-the-scenes of the Ask the Experts series, and I would like to give a big thank you to Sara for letting me interview her. Make sure to check out the other editorial article available in this edition, and I hope to see you next time. Bye!

The Social Media of Potterworld
Editorial
Written by: kvmw
Edited by: MaggieChi

Hello and welcome to the Daily Diviner’s Editorial column! My name is Iris, and today we’ll be discussing the various social media platforms that Potterworld uses to keep its players informed! Potterworld uses Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to connect with its players. Additionally, a monthly newsletter called the WizNewsletter is released to give a recap on what has happened during the month! We will cover how to access each social media platform and the information that can be found on each website in this article. So, without further ado, let’s jump right in!

The first social media account that I will cover is Potterworld’s Youtube account. Although not all people consider Youtube social media, social media facilitates the sharing of ideas, and Youtube has become one of the most popular ways to do so. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then think about how much a video is worth! Potterworld’s Youtube channel, called PotterworldMC, holds a wealth of information. From tutorials that show you how to navigate Potterworld to the Let’s Play videos showcasing the completion of various activities and events, the Potterworld Youtube channel is one of the best places to go for information about the server! Make sure to subscribe if you want to keep up with all the important and exciting videos that our amazing Potterwatch team releases!

The next social media I will cover is Instagram! Instagram is known for its primarily visual platform, and you can visit us at @potterworldmc to see the lovely graphics created by our Arithmancer team! These pictures often accompany captions, which might tell you a thing or two about the server. Instagram also has a feature known as “Stories,” which the Potterworld Instagram account uses to help players learn about future events, see useful info, and congratulate the Staff Members of the Month!

Facebook, our next social media, is very similar to Instagram, only it relies on text a little more to convey information. The Potterworld account username is @potterworldmc, and it shares much of the same information that the Potterworld Instagram account does. So whichever social media you feel like using is completely up to you!

Unlike Facebook and Instagram, Twitter’s communication of ideas centers around text; however, that doesn’t mean that graphics can’t be shared! Once you find us at @PotterworldMC, you’ll find information very similar to those of the previously mentioned social media accounts. Additionally, Twitter supports polls, something that allows Potterworld to see what you, the players, like best! Don’t forget to follow our Twitter account (and/or our Instagram and Facebook account) for all the amazing graphics and tidbits of information that our Social Media and Arithmancer teams work together to create!

Finally, I will round off with Potterworld’s monthly WizNewsletter! Though it is a rather recent creation—the first issue was released in October 2020—it still holds a ton of important information! It consists of five sections: Department and Applications, Server Announcements, Gameplay Updates, Community Updates, and Hires & Promotions. Departments and Applications lists which applications have opened/closed, while Server Announcements details updates to the Potterworld store and server. Gameplay Updates covers server roleplay and in-game events, which is different from Community Updates, which announces competition results and other such community events. And finally, Hires & Promotions, which informs players of any changes to the Potterworld team! The WizNewsletter can be found on the Potterworld website and is located under “Monthly News” on the home page. The WizNewsletter, which is created by our wonderful Social Media team, is an easy way to review everything that has happened to Potterworld in the past month, and it’s just a click away!

And with that, this article comes to an end. I hope you found this article informative, and be sure to check these accounts out! (And congrats you if you already have!) A special thank you to our SMP and Arithmancer teams for making this all possible. I hope you enjoyed this article, and I'll see you next time! Have a wonderful day!

Interwizard Tournament
Games and Sports
Written by: Becaologies
Edited by: kvmw

Hello, and welcome back to the Games and Sports column! As winter takes way, all the seasonal festivities are beginning to integrate their way into our daily lives. So get your house scarves and ask your date to the Winter Waltz, because the Interwizard Tournament is about to begin! Since we can’t partake in the activities ourselves, stick around till the end for some ideas on how to host safer, smaller-scale tournaments of your own!

To kick things off, I think it’s important we look back at the history of the event and why it hasn’t been carried out until today. Traced back at least seven hundred years ago, every five years, the top three wizarding schools in Europe (Hogsworth, Beauxbois, and Dormunstrad) have their students place their names into the Chalice of the Chosen to be picked randomly. In one of the most notable tournaments, the tournament of 1994, Henry Porter entered his name despite being below the age limit. He got picked to compete alongside a second competitor from Hogsworth, Caleb Diggen, against Flora Dolair and Vadim Krymov as the other competitors from Beauxbois and Dormunstrad, respectively. After a gruesome final event of the tournament that was part of Lord Valdemar's plot to kill Henry, Diggen tragically got caught in the crossfire and died.

The mourning of Diggen left the tournament in the dust. In a later interview with Porter, he wanted to let the wizarding world know that, “In the moment I knew Caleb wasn’t going to make it, I lost all care for the tournament and wished nothing but to save him. It was out of my hands and I’ll never forget him and his kindness.” Previous tournaments have also caused many injuries to competitors. For example, in 1792, each competitor got so badly injured, they couldn’t continue on with their events. This led to the tournament losing its popularity, and wasn’t reinstated until the most recent tournament of 1994.

Continuing on, the tournament presents three tasks for the competitors to prove their worthiness as the ‘best’ student from each school. Each task is designed to test the champions' courage, intelligence, resourcefulness, and magical ability. They are no easy feat, and progressively get more dangerous and difficult as they go on. Most wizards are already familiar with how the tournament of 1994 all went down, but just in case you haven’t, some of the events that have taken place include a standoff for a dragon’s egg, rescuing a beloved friend from a dangerous lake, and as mentioned before, a maze filled with riddles, challenges, and magical creatures. In the most recent tournament, after Caleb and Henry tied for first place at the maze, it was revealed that Caleb had been murdered by Lord Valdemar’s associate. With Hogsworth being the technical winner, the reward proved meaningless to Henry in the event of Caleb’s death. Henry instead gifted the prize money to Finn and Greg Weasleby to start up the Joke Shop of their dreams.

As exciting as the tournament sounds, for your own safety, it’s probably best to keep watching from the stands. That being said, it doesn’t stop you from holding tournaments of your own with your friends! Maybe set up a time and date where you compete in the Potterworld mini-games for an agreed-upon prize! Regarding a dragon, you can purchase a dragon pet to follow you around Hogsworth from the PW store to show off your dragon-whisperer skills!

All in all, the Interwizard Tournament is no simple feat. Through hundreds of years of obstacles and challenges, students have been representing their schools in one of the highest honors achievable. With the death of Lord Valdemar, hopefully, future events won't be as deadly, and may Caleb Diggen rest in peace.

Thanks for joining me today! See you next time!

Fun Fall Festivities
Lifestyle
Written by: Bertnana
Edited by: CelloIsMyLife

Hello readers, and welcome back to the Daily Diviner! In this fabulous edition, we will talk about the wondrous topics of the fall season. In my opinion, fall is the best season of all! From fluttering leaves with vivid shades of red and orange, to the sweet aroma of apples and pumpkins, fall’s beauty easily outweighs the rest of the seasons! Now, you may be wondering how to get the most of this fall season, so how should you go about it? Not to worry! Keep on reading because in this article, I’ll be covering a list of fun fall festivities that are perfect for the season!

Let’s begin with arguably the most important festivity of the season: fall-themed food! First up, we have a classic homemade treat: apple pie! It’s a straightforward process to prepare it, but the most exciting part is decorating. If you’re up for it, consider hosting a pie-baking contest with your family to showcase your skills! Not a pie person? Maybe you’re into drinks! You can buy some pumpkin punch from Wilbert Finnigan in the Carket Market, or possibly make some warm, homemade apple cider! To wrap up my food recommendations, I suggest you make sweet, caramel apples. They involve almost no effort at all, which can be beneficial for those who want a quick n’ easy snack to prepare. If you want more fall-themed foods, check out the next Lifestyle article in this issue, as it delves more into this topic. Needless to say, I’ll be stuffed with these sweet treats during the fall!

Gather your supplies readers, because next up we’ll be making some fall crafts! Keeping yourself warm in this chilly, fall weather is super important! Luckily, you can bundle up in warmth and be fashionable at the same time with this craft: scarves! I am, unfortunately, the wrong person to ask when it comes to knitting, but this is what magic is for! Simply bewitch a knitting needle, and it’ll quickly craft you a snazzy scarf! This next craft is more hands-on. You'll need creativity, patience, and pumpkins! You could paint your pumpkin intricate designs, carve some spooky or funny faces, bejewel it with sparkly beads, or whatever else your heart desires! Now, to round this up, this final craft can simply be a decoration for your home, but it can also help you in troublesome situations: scarecrows! Begin by building the frame with wooden boards; make sure it’s secure and sturdy! After, dress it up with some old clothes lying around and stuff the inside with straw. Then, place it somewhere in your garden to keep away pesky birds! Whether it be for your personal use or for decorations, these fall crafts will surely come in handy!

As we bring this list to a close, let’s talk about holidays celebrated in the fall! Besides Thanksgiving and Halloween, there’s a variety of other holidays that people of different cultures celebrate. For example, Chuseok is a Korean festival to give thanks to their ancestors and their abundant harvest season. Koreans can celebrate Chuseok by practicing special traditions and customs, playing Ssireum, a Korean folk game, or even eating a traditional stuffed rice cake called songpyeon. Another holiday is called the Moon Festival, which is similar to Chuseok, and it’s a festival celebrated to thank the moon during the time of harvest. Celebrations of the Moon Festival include eating traditional mooncakes, making and decorating moon lanterns, and also gatherings with family members. Lastly, Diwali is a five-day festival, in which people celebrate the triumphant victory of good over evil. During the five days, Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs celebrate by engaging in specific traditions set on each day, completely transforming their homes with decorations, and preparing Indian dishes like Pindi chole. Overall, fall is a season filled with many different celebrations, so we should all take the time to learn about other holidays other than our own.

Well, my readers, we have made it to the end of the article! I sincerely hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it! Overall, I think these festivities will surely make the rest of the fall enjoyable! What did you think? Which festivity are you looking forward to the most? I would love to hear about your experiences! Personally, I’ll be baking some apple pies and (magically) knitting a scarf! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my article, and I wish you a wonderful week!

My Favorite Fall Foods
Lifestyle
Written by: Carolllyn
Edited by: MamaDuckie

Hello witches and wizards! Welcome to another one of my lifestyle articles. We are quickly approaching the depths of fall, so it’s safe to say many of us are knee deep in living this time up! During fall, there is nothing I want to do more than immerse myself in what the season has to offer. And what better way to do so than to use food as this medium? Yeah, it’s the best way! In this article, I’m going to announce, recommend, and share my absolute favorite fall foods!

Let’s start with Eggnog! Yes, a classic. As soon as grocery stores began stocking up on this drink in their huge refrigerators, I honestly considered purchasing one of these machines for myself to do the same. Or even buy out the entire store. I’ll just say that every fall season, 99% of my fridge is reserved for this sweet, thick, and spicy beverage.

Next up: Butterbrew! As wizards, we grew up on this stuff. I can just imagine enjoying a tall glass of this butterscotch beverage at the Cauldron Inn on a crisp, fall evening. The flavor is impeccably, iconically, fall and I don’t think any of us can get enough of its tangy, sparkling, creamy, sweet, starring role in the season.

Ooey, gooey, Cinnamon Buns! I may be addicted to sticky, sweet things because anything doused in a thick layer of glaze continues to call my name. This is no ordinary pastry. Like eggnog, the classic spices of fall are obvious. The warm, oven-baked bread compliments the season in a way no other glutinous food item could.

For the Starbucks-lovers out there, this is for you. I’m going to mention Pumpkin Spice Lattes. These are absolute necessities. I know many of us are in denial about this fact, but I think we should just get over ourselves. Going back to the basics with this coffee doesn’t seem like such a bad idea (though I do usually opt for the Chestnut Praline Latte).

HOT CHOCOLATE! Let’s be real for a second. Nothing, and I mean nothing, can epitomize fall more than a piping hot cup of this liquid chocolate with way too many marshmallows on top. And, sitting in front of a fireplace, at that. Have I said enough? I think so. Moving on!

Last, but not least, Apple Cider. Foraging for apples throughout this season is a complete must and, after a hard day’s work, it’s also a must-have drink - exactly what you deserve. It’s refreshing and sweet, an unbeatable combination. Best part, you may ask? One can make Apple Cider Donuts from this beverage (obviously, it’s in the name). This is double trouble (in a good way) for fall!

Alright, my friends. I hope you all enjoyed hearing about my favorite fall foods, which in my important opinion, should definitely be deemed facts. Let me know what you think by messaging me in-game, sending me a book and quill in-game, or sending me a direct message on Discord. This was Carolyn Lestrange, reporting for the Daily Diviner.

Give Magical Thanks
Original Works
Written by: Silquer
Edited by: kvmw

It was a cold Thanksgiving day, and although October had just begun, September still held fast to its seasonal grip. Will pondered the day ahead of him as he stared out the window of his dad’s car, looking at the beautiful orange and red Canadian foliage. Ah, Thanksgiving, the best magical holiday of the year. Delicious stuffing, turkey, and cranberry sauce were all magical staples of his favorite holiday. Will’s hunger grew as he thought of all the delicious foods he would undoubtedly taste later that afternoon, and he once again grew excited at the journey ahead of him.

Every year, his father left early and gathered ingredients, leaving Will and his sister to help their mother prepare the other pre-bought foods. However, this year, he could go with his dad to finally discover what made Thanksgiving so magical. After years of waiting, he was finally to learn the secrets of his parents’ magical Thanksgiving!

The car finally slowed to a stop, jarring Will out of his thoughts.

“You ready?” his dad asked as he turned the key and shut off the engine of the car.

“Yep,” Will replied, already pushing the car door open. He stepped onto the cool pavement and painted lines and immediately knew something wasn’t right. Where was the magic?

He followed his dad closely as they walked towards the entrance of the store. The doors slid open as they drew close, and Will nearly jumped, before stopping himself and gathering his composure. Yes, it looked non-magical, but it could very well be hiding a magical shop underneath. But Will soon learned that this was not the case.

He wasn’t quite sure what he had expected, but this was not it. In every sense of the word, it was an Unmagical grocery store. Will looked at his dad questioningly, but he was already on the move with a metal cart from a nearby stack.

Will caught up quickly but didn’t dare say a word about his surprise for fear of being laughed at. They slowly went down aisle after aisle with their hand-pushed cart, picking up boxes of food while weaving through crowds of people. At last, his dad deemed their cart full, and they wandered over to a counter to check out. After paying they left the store and unloaded their bags into the car.

“Um… I noticed that we picked up a lot of non-magical items,” Will started as soon as they were settled in the seats of the car. “Is there nothing magical in there?”

Will’s dad smiled knowingly. “Look for yourself.” Will peered at their haul carefully. Not a single magical item, no matter how hard he tried to see. “Magical ingredients wouldn’t quite make the same meal,” his dad added.

The rest of the ride passed in Will’s contemplative silence, and they arrived home after a long drive. As soon as the car stopped, Will jumped out of the car and left his dad to bring the, as the Unmagical call it, “groceries” into the house. Upon entering, the sweet smell of baked squash, bitter aroma of cut potatoes, and cozy oven heat drew him to the kitchen, where his mom was working alone. A quick analysis told him that his little sister was in her room, completely ignoring her chores. He mentioned it aloud, and she laughed.

“You can’t blame her,” she said as she peeled the skin of another potato, strip by strip. “In fact, I remember you used to do the same thing when you were her age.” Will’s face turned red, and he fell silent. He took the moment of quiet to observe the room and noticed something peculiar. She wasn’t using any magic.

His mom must have seen his perplexed look and, without glancing up from the potatoes, started to explain. “I don’t mind the extra work without magic. Besides,” she added, looking up at him, “Thanksgiving doesn’t need magic to be magical.” She turned away and began humming softly to herself. Will took this as his cue to leave and walked into the living room, sitting down on the couch. He had only a few minutes to ponder her words before he fell fast asleep.

When he woke, the table was set, and his dad and sister were already sitting patiently. He moved to the table and sat down with his family as his mom brought out the dishes she had made in the kitchen. After everything had been set and his mom was seated, they each said a quick thank you, loaded their plates, and dug in. Upon taking a bite of his mom’s traditional turkey, Will’s eyes widened. It was the same taste as every year, and, as he now knew, all concocted without magic. He finally understood what his parents were trying to tell him. He shoveled food into his mouth as his family talked and laughed, and he knew there was a deeper magic at work here. The dinner passed as normal, but Will never looked at a meal with his family the same way again.

The Quiz
Original Works
Written by: thatgirlskyyy
Edited by: MamaDuckie

Yesterday evening, I sat down with my pal Robin to study the crown that belonged to the founder of the Raven house, otherwise known as the diadem.

I had a quiz I hope I passed in my 9 o’clock History of Magic class. But last night the students made so much chit chat and no one could find a way to quiet them.

It was too hard to focus. All the gossip they were saying was bogus. It got so bad that I couldn’t remember which stone sat atop the very headpiece that represented them.

As much as I love being a Raven, sometimes I feel my thoughts start to cave in and my room is the place I should have stayed in.

I gave up and packed up my books. Without a doubt, I know I got looks because of how long it took for me to simply walk up the stairs.

I plopped down my bag and laid down in bed, finally resting my heavy head and I decided to sleep instead since it was clear that nobody cares.

When morning came, I left in a hurry and almost tripped on a rat that decided to scurry over my foot to get to the curry someone had dropped on the floor.

Then I broke into a mad dash and began to fear that no matter how fast I ran to get to that class I wouldn’t reach the door.

Miraculously I arrived as it struck the hour and then I sat down and began to cower as I remembered I forgot to shower because I left in a flash.

The teacher passed out the quiz. I wrote my name on the line. I had some doubts on number nine but I was running out of time. The rest of the test was totally fine. Gosh, I hope I pass.
