Overview
In ancient wizarding times, wands were non-existent and wizardkind had to channel magic through themselves. Without a safe way to channel the raw magic within them, some wizards lost control and caused many magic-induced accidents. By the 4th century BCE, the ancient Celtics successfully formulated a way to channel magic through a magical core encased in wood.
The Celtics' success soon spread like wildfire amongst all the wizarding communities in the world. Starting from Europe, the practice was soon introduced to Asia, Africa and America by the late 15th century. However, the first problem with wands soon arose, they looked too much like ordinary sticks which led to many confusions. To overcome the issue, wandmakers began carving patterns into wands and bending them into various shapes. They also started decorating them with various metal ornaments or paint for personalisation purposes.
Not all trees are able to provide wood for wands, and the ability of a tree to provide wand wood is also inherited. Out of all the trees in the world, only a sheer 0.02% of species are suitable for wand-making. Identifying wood suitable for wand-making is complex, and wandmakers determine it through properties such as the shape or composition of the tree.
Besides wood, wands can be made up of other materials such as jade or ivory. Each material is unique for its owner and denotes different personalities. Generally, oak wands denote power and survival while olive wands represent peace. Besides the material of the wood, the rigidity of the wand affects the properties of the wand as well. Bendy wands are usually for the more adaptable while unyielding wands are for those who are steadfast and bold.
All magicians are able to practice and produce magic using any wand available. However, a wand which does not belong to them might be harder to control. As the saying “the wand chooses the wizard” goes, the wood of the wand greatly influences whom the wand acknowledges as its owner. When the wand’s core and wood reach an agreement about a wizard, it will emit sparks or light to inform that it is the right one.
Being a strong magical object, a wand can last a lifetime. However, it may stop working properly if the wood is rotten or cracked. Physical damage may cause the wand core to be exposed, leading to more unstable magic. If the wand’s wood starts to rot or deteriorate, it may also be a sign that the wrong owner has been using it for too long or that the core is unstable and corrupted.
