Academics Weekly Assignment — July 24th, 2022

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of July 24th, 2022! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Wizarding Fashion - Adaawaḵ Wilp-siwilaaks" created by Lyra (myriadofanger).

The assignment is as follows:
Background
Pronounced A[daa]waḵ wilp-si[wilaa]ks and translating to School of Legend, Adaawaḵ Wilp-siwilaaks is located in northern British Columbia. It was founded by the Nisga people, however, it is unknown when or by whom. It is known that the reasons for creation were to educate and protect the Nisga people’s children as magic became more and more commonplace. As time went on, more Indigenous groups were allowed to attend before the school gained enough popularity for anyone to come.

To arrive, a boat from Vancouver will take the students to the school that lies at a river base surrounded by mountains. The common age of attendance begins at 11-14 years, however, those as young as 9 may come. It takes between 7-9 years to complete the education curriculum, though the school is split into 5 learning stages.

The school has a focus on classes such as Divination and Herbology, but all subjects are able to be taught. Due to the school's origins and reasons for creation, the school keeps true to the Nisga people’s culture and teaches many ancient traditions during the school day. Students will not use a wand until their second stage of learning. The first task the student will do upon entering stage two of learning is gather the wand ingredients that speak to them and craft a wand with the teacher’s assistance.

In their third learning stage, they will join one of four groups that are named to remember four of the original Nisga tribes:
Ganada, meaning raven: has a focus on healing and herbology.
Gisk’aast, meaning killer whale: has a focus on divination and transfiguration.
Laxgibuu, meaning wolf: has a focus on protection and fighting.
Laxgiik, meaning eagle: has a focus on history and charms.

Students are allowed to pick to learn all topics in depth as a 5th option, which is popular amongst those wishing to be teachers. Outside of learning, the students wander the nearby village and tend to shop amongst local businesses.

While there is no uniform at the school, each learning year has a brooch they must pin to their shirt or jacket to identify their skill level.

Assignment
Since Adaawaḵ Wilp-siwilaaks has no uniform, take this time to create your own! What do you think the uniform at this school would be like if they had one? Would it be overall, change by skill level, be by which group a student joins, or something else? Why would the uniform be what you created? Be creative!
