Academics Weekly Assignment — October 23rd, 2022

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of October 23rd, 2022! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Ancient Studies - Cretaceous Period" created by Dark (DarktheDino).

The assignment is as follows:
Overview
The Cretaceous Period makes up the third and final period of the Mesozoic era. Commonly known as the “dinosaur era”, this period of time lasted for approximately 79 million years. At the start of the Cretaceous, the temperature turned subtropical and flowering plants grew across the lands.

Insects and other organisms soon evolved and took advantage of the new food sources and opportunities these plants provided. Marine and ocean life flourished, with many new species emerging such as the Mosasaurs which could grow up to 17 metres in length.

This period saw the emergence of the largest land predators, such as the Tyrannosaurus Rex, and the largest flying animal, Quetzalcoatlus. These terrifying creatures soon topped the food chain in the period and became one of the most well-known carnivores in dinosaur history. Dinosaurs roamed the land and air while massive marine creatures could be found lurking in the oceans.

The rise of sea levels began due to rapid tectonic plate movements. Ocean volumes fluctuated and the seas reached their highest levels during the Cretaceous Period, resulting in many shallow oceans. A huge land shift happened, and by the end of the era, Africa and South America had assumed their distinctive shapes.

However, the Cretaceous Period came to an end when an asteroid called the “Chicxulub crater” struck the Earth. Being larger than 110 miles in diameter, it caused a huge blast radius which wiped out many living species. The meteor also caused many forest fires to start and killed even more creatures due to the raised temperatures and sparks from the meteorite. The end of this period was followed by the start of the Paleogene Period.

Assignment
Imagine that one day, you were in a museum when you saw a sparkling object in an exhibition nearby. Upon touching it, you were teleported back to the Cretaceous Period and saw bright yellow eyes staring at you from the bushes nearby. What would you do? Do you manage to get home in the end?
