Overview
ขนมปังกับท็อปปิ้ง, known in English as “bread with toppings”, was a food created by a woman named Nin to form a combination between a lovely Italian dish and Thai flavours. This would be created in 1872, and it comes in a few different varieties with magical attributes one cannot miss out on!
History
In 1872, a woman named Nin found herself overly stressed out after a week-long vacation in Italy. To calm herself down and forget about all the work she had to do, she entered the kitchen to play around with flavours. This soon led her to spiral into a focused trance, combining foods to perhaps sell in her restaurant or be something new and exciting.
Eventually, she did it. She mixed the lovely idea of the Italian bruschetta with Thai flavours and technique, managing to balance sour, sweet, salty, spicy, umami (or savoriness), and—when applicable—bitter all in one dish. Three different versions were made, all with special attributes. Nin wanted the foods to do more and stand out compared to other dishes.
Thus, the three “bread with toppings'' variants were sold in her restaurant, ปีศาจสไปซี่ (Spicy Devil), with great success in both magical and Unmagical forms. It is safe to say this food has become a staple in many people’s daily cooking routines due to the experimentation of Nin.
Flavours
There are three main types of “bread with toppings.”
1. ขนมปังกับท็อปปิ้งข้าว or “bread with rice toppings”
This version is made using ingredients such as rice, galangal, kaffir lime, thai chillies, lemongrass, and more. It is more on the savoury side and more of a main course compared to some others. It is quite filling, thus Nin enchanted it to make the consumer of the food extra strong (physically, mentally, emotionally…) for around an hour. They’ll also experience extra stamina for the same amount of time.
2. “ขนมปังที่มีความรุ่งโรจน์ตอนเช้าที่ผัด” or “bread with sautéed morning glory”
This version is made using ingredients or foods such as pak boong, fish sauce, thai chillies, and fermented soybean sauce. This food is somehow lightweight and very earthy, and it is more of a side compared to the rice version. Nin enchanted the food to allow the consumer to feel lighter than air and hover off the ground (only 2 metres) for up to an hour at will. The consumer will glow and slightly sparkle, and they’ll feel happier.
3. “ขนมปังกับท็อปปิ้งของหวาน” or “bread with dessert toppings”
This version is made using ingredients such as coconut flakes and milk, pineapple, mango, brown sugar, and sticky rice. This is definitely a sweet version of the dish, and is, as said in the name, eaten as a desert. Nin enchanted the food to provide the consumer with super speed, enhanced accuracy/precision, and attention to detail for up to an hour.
It is said that combining the breads might not give a desired result. While one person may experience all 3 powers equally, another might only have one bread’s powers. It isn’t a science on who experiences what, so proceed with caution.
