Academics Weekly Assignment — August 28th, 2022

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of August 28th, 2022! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Herbology - Avilum" created by Lyra (myriadofanger).

The assignment is as follows:
Overview
Due to having existed for aeons, the one who discovered Avilum is unknown. The uncertainty of this plant's origins has led to the sparking of different rumours across the globe. One might say Avilum has existed since the beginning of time while another says this beautiful plant was the result of a wizard’s mistake. Either way, the plant’s appearance remains the same: a black, stem, white three-pointed petals that appear to glow, and black stamen.

Though beautiful, this plant has caused issues amongst the unmagical population due to the harmful effects it can cause. Those who touched the flower without the proper precautions ended up dead due to an incurable, to unmagicals, poison. The Ministry of Magicians made the decision to remove the evidence, both physical and in memory, of this plant actually existing, leading unmagicals to believe Avilum is a myth. Unmagicals will simply say the plant is from Homer’s The Odyssey, created from spilt giant blood.

The plant can be used for many different things, and the most common usage is for healing effects. The entire plant can be used in different ways to achieve stronger or weaker effects. The strongest and most pure form is Avilum essence which takes 24 hours to create.

Extreme research is necessary to be able to properly use the plant for its effects and to care for it.

Care
Avilum is incredibly toxic to the touch and requires a guard between skin and the plant to touch. Once gathered (while wearing special gloves for the plant), it must be stored in specific bags until used. Any substance made from this plant, such as essence or paste, must be stored in opaque containers to prevent light from entering. One hour of light can render this substance useless.

To grow it, these specialised gloves are required in order to touch the plant. Typically, those who grow Avilum also use separate tools to care for this flower so as to not spread any toxins onto other plants or surfaces.

Avilum requires lots of space to grow properly, as it tends to have the vine-like tendency to grow up and spread. The plant is also temperamental, liking areas that have a balance of light and dark. Finally, be sure to water this plant often and drench it when watering time comes about. Avilum loves water and will dry out quickly if not provided enough.

Assignment
You are a herbologist who runs across wild Avilum. Worried that it will harm others, you decide you must do something. What do you do? Do you try to harvest the plant there, or do you re-root it to take it home and grow? What tools do you use to do whatever outcome you decide? Do you get injured, make things from the plant, care for it, etc.? What happens? Be creative!
