Academics Weekly Assignment — December 11th, 2022

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of December 11th, 2022! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Unmagical Studies - Santa Claus" created by Angie (itky).

The assignment is as follows:
Overview
In the United States and other nations, Santa Claus, a legendary character, is known for bringing gifts to children and serving as the holiday's patron saint. His well-known image is founded on beliefs related to Saint Nicholas, a Christian saint from the fourth century. In several European nations, Father Christmas serves in this manner.

History
The legend of Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) and the custom of giving gifts and sweets to children on his feast day, December 6, are both said to have come to New Amsterdam (now New York City) via the Dutch. Santa Claus as he is portrayed today was inspired by cartoons created by Thomas Nast starting in 1863 for Harper's Weekly.

Nast's depiction of Santa was heavily influenced by the portrayal in the 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (commonly known as "'Twas the Night Before Christmas"). The well-known Santa Claus advertising that illustrator Haddon Sundblum made for the Coca-Cola Company starting in 1931 helped to further define the image. Sundblum's Santa was a hefty, white-bearded man with black boots, a soft red helmet, and a red suit with a black belt and white fur trim.

Santa Claus is believed to reside at the North Pole with his wife, where he works with his elves to make toys throughout the year. There, he receives letters from kids requesting Christmas presents. On Christmas Eve, Santa fills his sleigh with toys and, accompanied by eight reindeer, flies across the globe, stopping at each child's home. He slides down the chimney to leave the gifts while recharging with milk and cookies that the children of the home have left for him.

Assignment
Imagine you were a child on Christmas Eve, impatiently waiting for Santa Claus to come down the chimney and deliver your presents for Christmas Day. However, you fall asleep! When you wake up, Santa Claus is there delivering presents underneath your tree! How does your encounter with Santa go? Do you speak to him, or do you stay silent, hoping he won’t notice you being awake?
