Academics Weekly Assignment — December 12th, 2021

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of December 12th, 2021! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Ancient Studies - Colosseum,” created by Courtney (epic_cool_mcgee).

The assignment is as follows:
Background
The Colosseum was the grandest amphitheater in the time of ancient Rome, with its name coming from its ‘colossal’ size. The Colosseum is also sometimes known as the Flavian Amphitheater because it was constructed during the reigns of emperors from the Flavian Dynasty. In ancient times the Colosseum was built as a gift for the citizens of Rome; it was a place for entertainment and was a display of ancient Roman wealth and power.

The Colosseum could fit somewhere between 50,000 and 87,000 people—quite an impressive number! Everyone was seated in a tiered arrangement that reflected how strictly structured Roman society was.

The amphitheater was made out of limestone, tuff (volcanic rock), and brick-faced concrete. The exterior walls were made of many arches and filled with complex patterns. Later on, the Colosseum was no longer used for public entertainment and was instead used for things like a fortress, a shrine, housing, and workshops.

Today, the Colosseum remains an iconic symbol of Ancient Rome and was even the most popular tourist attraction in the world with 7.4 million visitors in 2018.

Assignment
You have been transported to the past into the Colosseum as a gladiator. As you stand there trying to figure out what’s happening, an opposing gladiator charges toward you. What do you do to escape? Do you make it back to the future? Be as creative, funny, and clever as your heart desires!
