Academics Weekly Assignment — February 5th, 2023

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of February 5th, 2023! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Ancient Runes - Fehu" created by Logan (sunvens).

The assignment is as follows:
Overview
Fehu (“fay-who”) represents the letter “F” in “Futhark” and looks like a slightly slanted F (ᚠ). While the meaning of this rune is prosperity, it’s sometimes translated as cattle. This is because owning cattle used to be a sign of wealth in ancient times. A major interpretation of this rune involves money, property, or income. Additionally, Fehu represents power and control. This is traditionally over wealth but can be interpreted as power over self, energy, or health. It’s a rune of literal and figurative wealth in aspects of love, gratefulness, and generosity. This is shown mostly through the rune’s deeper elemental meaning. Fehu is the rune of fire. This fire relates to primal energy or the pure energy that must be channelled within oneself. In divination, it can symbolise new beginnings, creation, health, strength, and prosperity. In spirituality, it can represent the pursuit of truth or resentment of secrecy. Physiologically, Fehu is very integral to one’s body and well-being. It relates to blood circulation, the heart, and the central nervous system. Fehu is one of Freyr’s Aett (or “eight”) as a symbol of a healthy and rewarding life. Freyr is a god in Norse mythology, as elder futhark runes are a nordic alphabet! Freyr is the god of peace and fertility. Freyr’s Aettir are 8 runes representative of peace or fertility, sacred to Freyr. Freyr’s Aett also includes Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo, and Wunjo.

Assignment
Imagine you come across an object with this rune carved into it. The object holds the rune’s energy and meaning. How would this affect you? How would you react?
