Academics Weekly Assignment — January 1st, 2023

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of January 1st, 2023! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Magical Crime Studies - The Owl Thief" created by Lyra (myriadofanger).

The assignment is as follows:
Notes
The month of October in 1981 was a time of mystery and wonder. Seemingly overnight, the owls in the Diagonal Lane Owl Emporium vanished from sight, and no one had any idea what could have occurred. Auralocks interviewed the owner of the Owl Emporium, and they claimed that all the owls were put away as usual the night before. The next morning, each and every owl was missing.

After investigating the scene for a week, the case was declared unsolvable by Auralocks. Though the method of entry, blowing the door off, was very violent, the rest of the shop, mind the opened cages and missing owls, looked untouched. For a year, all pet owners were nervous of a repeat, but this soon faded until November of 1982.

That very year, the very same Diagonal Lane Owl Emporium had a repeat offence, but the door was simply magically tampered with this time. This was also declared unsolvable, and news quickly spread of the Auralocks inability to solve the case and the want for safety for the owls. Unfortunately, many tried to recreate the owl theft and gather fame from the mystery. They were less successful, seeing as a teenager from Kilkenny, Ireland was attacked by the owls he was attempting to steal.

The attack in 1982 was the last for the thief. With the sudden end, many have questions as to who the thief was, their motive, and why they stopped. Some believe it was an animal rights activist, some believe it was a rival pet shop owner, and even a small percentage believe it to be a dark wizard gathering owls for potions. The effects of the Owl Thief remain, and the Diagonal Lane Owl Emporium stays ever vigilant with extra-strong protection on every entrance on the slight chance the thief might strike again.

Assignment
You are the lead magical criminalist or Auralock who was assigned to the Owl Thief case. After surveying the shop, the case seems to be unsolvable! Do you find a way to figure it out? If you aren’t able to solve the case, why? How do you handle the aftermath and eventual restrike? If you do manage to solve it, how so? What clues led you to the conclusion? Be creative!
