Academics Weekly Assignment — January 29th, 2023

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of January 29th, 2023! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Magical Objects - Butterfly Flute" created by Angie (itky).

The assignment is as follows:
Overview
A mystical flute known as the Butterfly Flute summons a swarm of butterflies. Due to its excellent resistance to moisture absorption, grenadilla wood was chosen to make the flute. The flute has been finished up with a fine polish and a variety of butterflies have been etched onto its wood.

Once a cheerful song is played, it summons forth butterflies who can put anyone. The butterflies will, however, attack anyone they consider to be the object of the musician's power if the flute plays a darker tune.

History
A man named Leonor Santos carved the Butterfly Flute for the first time in 1875. One night when he was having trouble getting his child to sleep, he realized there was no suitable product to help a parent with this task. He came up with a variety of viable ideas while keeping this in mind. Yet none of them were successful.

Leonor grew upset after working on plans for weeks with no success and made the decision to attend a live orchestra concert in an effort to calm things down. He was captivated by the beauty of the flutes when they began to play. Even though his wife had put him to sleep a few hours earlier, when he went home that evening, he discovered his toddler to be wide awake. Leonor experienced an epiphany as a result of this.

Early in the morning, Leonor could be seen shaping a piece of wood into a tiny flute. He spent many days working on this project before he was eventually satisfied with the outcome. The following few days were spent by him practicing a soothing flute melody. He wasn't happy with the end product, though. Leonor returned to his desk and began playing with magic. After some thought, he decided to use conjuration.

He continued experimenting until he developed the concept of a calm song that, when played, conjured butterflies. It had a negative impact, though. Leonor enchanted the object incorrectly and was unable to fix it due to his lack of experience in the creation of magical objects. The butterflies would begin attacking whoever they perceived as the target of the enchantment should anyone play a hostile melody. As a result, only one Butterfly Flute was produced, but it was incredibly effective at lulling Leonor's child to sleep.

Assignment
Imagine you were in Leonor's position… Your child is struggling to sleep per day, regardless of who puts him to bed. You, being tired of the reckless crying in the middle of the night, decide to invent something to help your child sleep better. To no avail, you find yourself at an orchestra. This is when inspiration strikes! Which instrument in the orchestra do you decide to base your creation off of? What does it look like, and what does it do? Is it similar to the Butterfly Flute or completely the opposite?
