Academics Weekly Assignment — October 16th, 2022

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of October 16th, 2022! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Astronomy - Micrometeorites" created by Toad (ElizabethTheToad).

The assignment is as follows:
Background
The term ‘micro-meteorite’ was first said in 1950 by Fred Lawerence Whipple, an astronomer who made important discoveries throughout his career. Since then, we have learned a bit more about what exactly micrometeorites are.

Despite their name coming from ‘meteorite’, a rock from space that enters the Earth’s atmosphere, they are quite different. Their most obvious distinction is that they are much smaller than meteorites. Meteorites are typically 30 micrometres to 1 metre, while micrometeorites are often measured in submillimetres and less than a gram each. They are also much more abundant than meteorites, with an estimated 30,000 tons of micrometeorites reaching Earth’s surface yearly.

There’s some evidence that micrometeorites don’t break off from meteorites and are already particles of dust in space. Even so, they have a very similar composition found in meteorites, with the same ratios of metal and elements.

Previously, most scientists only attempted to collect micrometeorites from remote regions in the Antarctic. Recently, however, scientists and amateur micrometeorite collectors have begun finding them on roofs in urban areas. It’s possible to collect them from outdoor areas with a lot of accumulated dust, though powerful magnets are often required to find them.

Assignment
Would you ever attempt to find your own micrometeorite? If so, where would you go to find one?
