Academics Weekly Assignment — October 9th, 2022

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of October 9th, 2022! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Ancient Runes - Origins of Futhark" created by Logan (LoganTheLamb).

The assignment is as follows:
Overview
Elder Futhark runes are a collection of symbols that make up an old alphabet. Germanic tribes in northern Europe used this alphabet until the 13th century. The Goths of eastern Europe, the Anglo-Saxons of Germany, the Netherlands, and England, and the Danes and Vikings of Scandinavia used Futhark runes. The Scandinavian Danes and Vikings are often grouped together as Norse or Nordic. Since there’s more written history from these groups, Elder Futhark is considered a Nordic alphabet.

The earliest runic inscriptions date to around 200 B.C.E. (Before Common Era). In Norse tradition, it was believed that the great god Odin discovered runes. This is recorded in an epic poem called “Havamal” from 9th century Iceland. Despite these beliefs, most historians think runic alphabets actually derived from early Latin.

Many used runes for communication or writing, but they were also used for magic. The “Runemaster” profession was prominent until the mid-19th century in Iceland. These runemasters connected runes to ancient Nordic myths and wisdom. Runes were perceived as magical not only through their connection to myths but also as a standalone alphabet. It was believed that the ability to communicate complex ideas in writing was a magical ability. This evolved into writing being a way to manipulate natural forces. Runes were often carved into bone, wood, stone, or clay to harness their natural power.

Assignment
Imagine you are part of Nordic culture in the early days of runes. How do you feel about them? Do you think they’re just for communication, or do you channel their magic?
