Buttery Roots

We are coming up on another fantastic event created by the wonderful Game Design team – The Butterbrew Event! As excited as we are, we are not here today to tease the event, but instead we are here to take a look back on some of the locations and Butterbrew Events of the past, specifically the last three years’.

Back in 2021, we took a short stroll down from our beloved school to the magical village of Hogsend which hosted the Butterbrew Event that year.

The streets were decked out in the traditional hues of white, orange and brown in celebration. Tents, stalls and tables filled the area near the Broomsticks Inn, bringing even more life to the village.

One could be entertained by one of the many activities available, such as the minigames Butterbrew Parkour, and the Honeysweets Maze, or by one of the repeatable quests Order Up!, and Pie Baking Contest. The vendors were not in short supply of collectables for those who wished to trade in their tokens for memorabilia, either.

The Butterbrew Carnival was hosted in 2022, bringing us back to Hogsend for the festivities.

Like the previous year, the traditional Butterbrew colors were displayed everywhere for all to see on tents and stalls, on table umbrellas and on banners hanging overhead, letting every visitor know that they were in the right place for Butterbrew-themed activities.

High Top Hop and Trapeze Trouble were the new minigames this year among older haunts such as Brewery Bound. Other new activities consisted of two competitions: the Brewing Battles and the Petting Zoo, allowing carnival goers to help out well-known breweries compete for the title of Ultimate Brewmasters, or to get the rare opportunity to feed magical creatures for a chance at House points!

Last year, we traveled much further for our Butterbrew celebrations, heading all the way to Appleby Village. With the added addition of purple to the traditional colors of the festivals we came to love, visitors could play Balloon Darts, participate in a Food Eating Competition, and check out an adorable Plushie Farm at the event.

Minigames and other repeatable side quests were also available to keep you entertained for hours on end. At the end of the day when your pockets were full of tokens, the vendors were on hand for some special collectables to take home.

These were only some of the Butterbrew Festivals we have been to in the past, and they are not the last either. If you listen close enough, you can hear the telltale signs of stalls being put together and the sweet smell of butterbrew drifting through the air.

There is a buzz in the air in anticipation of what is to come. We here at the Daily Diviner cannot wait to see you there, so gather your friends and make space in your pockets, the Butterbrew Festival is on the horizon!

Coastal Competition
Editorial
Written by Silquer
Edited by Calliequeen

Hello, my dear readers, and welcome to a very special seasonal Editorial! This season of minigame map rotations have taken a turn for the coastal, bringing players on a tour through the warmest and most summery locations imaginable. These maps embody the idealistic summer, and it is fantastic that we get to play in them every once in a while. Let us take a look at these seasonal locations and what they bring to the minigames themselves.

Melting Floor is a fun and action-packed minigame, full of betrayal and lots of falling. Players fight to stay alive while the floor falls out beneath them, and the last player standing is the winner. The seasonal map, Underwater, creates a unique experience in the game. This map is completely submerged, with the first-floor arena walls being a transparent view of the ocean. As players jump around, they can catch glimpses of a giant anchor and plenty of sea creatures swimming peacefully; a contrast to the chaos inside the arena.

As players fall through the floors, they will descend into the depths of the ocean. The arena becomes a dark abyss, filled with murky water and an eerie atmosphere. Watch out for the giant anglerfish waiting for you to fall! I love that this map has players traversing the depths of the sea, going deeper into the ocean as players fall. It certainly creates a unique Melting Floor experience!

Hide and Seek is a classic of the Potterworld minigames. No daily login is complete without a round of Hide and Seek! Players must hide from the seeker in this minigame, taking the form of certain blocks to blend in with the scenery around them. In this minigame’s seasonal map, Boardwalk, there are plenty of nooks and crannies for players to hide in this beautiful coastal location. I feel bad for any seekers who have to search through this map; a large beach and boardwalk filled with buildings is a lot of ground to cover.

Regardless, both hider and seeker can enjoy their time spent in this map. Even though the game does not last too long, players still have plenty of time to drink in the sights of the boardwalk and the lovely ocean with boats aplenty. Make sure not to get too distracted, though! Hide and Seek maps are always so much fun to explore, and the vibes of this map really bring summer to life. It is definitely worth trying to play this map while playing Hide and Seek!

Flying is an absolute classic of a minigame, and one of the most popular minigames for its fast pace and short-and-sweet maps, perfectly sized for a bite-sized race for victory. Players brandish their brooms and fly through rings spread about detailed maps, racing to cross the finish line first. In the Coastline map, players fly around a beautiful coastal beach, complete with a lovely bay, cliff sides, and a quaint lighthouse. There is a lot to take in on this course and plenty to explore.

Players must fly right through the rings to make it to first place, past the volleyball net, through the lighthouse, and underwater, all for a chance at victory. It is thrilling to fly through these parts of the map! I adore what this map brings to Flying; it really feels like you are soaring around a quiet beach with only the sky ahead of you.

My favorite is very easily Underwater in Melting Floor. The idea of traveling deep undersea and the creativity behind the map is too perfect for it to not be my favorite. Which map draws you in the most? If you have not played any of these maps yet, be sure to play plenty of minigames so you will be able to see them all before they disappear for the year. Happy playing!

The Build Team's Scaffolding
Server Spotlight
Written by SnowyKitty
Edited by bluecherub

Introducing the Build team: the only team cool enough to have their own, private department. The team consists of four ranks, starting with Jr. Builders and Sr. Builders and including Jr. Architects and Sr. Architects. Every single block you have seen on Potterworld was placed by them – there is no escape!

While all of us have built a dirt house, the Build team takes on larger and grander projects. And, unlike a quaint dirt house, Potterworld was not built in a day. But how did they do it? How do they keep up with designing classrooms and minigame arenas while simultaneously creating large event maps? And, especially, how do they make it look so good? Today, Sr. Architect Jake (jake_ft) has decided to share these inside facts with us!

What made you decide to become a Jr. Builder and stick around to become a senior member?
I've always enjoyed building and would play creative over survival any day. I've played Minecraft for as long as I can remember, and I became pretty good at building during this time. In January 2022, I was accepted for the role of Jr. Prefect on the staff team, and while in this role, I gained a great understanding of what the Potterworld team was, which included the Build team! When Build applications reopened in early 2022, I knew that I had to apply! I've stuck around since then due to the many unique projects that I can work on, from futuristic builds like the Galactic Starcruiser to more traditional builds like the Cherry Blossom Scenery.

How are build projects decided?
Build projects are requested by the other departments and then get sent out to the Build team. Each build will have a group of Builders working on it, usually ranging from 1-5. Of course, our biggest builds are event builds and world additions, though there's a huge range of other fun activities from classrooms to housing sceneries! My personal favourite at the moment is housing sceneries, and there are some amazing builds coming up.

How does the team decide on the concepts of your builds? Namely, how do you develop ideas and then narrow them down?
Most concepts are from requests by the other teams, though individuals can also choose what we want to build! We don't really have a narrowing down process, as we can work on our ideas provided they're approved by Build leadership.

How do you decide what details to include in build projects?
We often work together at the start to gather inspiration images and compile the aesthetic that we'll go for. This usually involves the sharing of images from Google Maps, video games, movies, or just things we've seen!

For the 2023 Winter Waltz at Monde Occulte, we started by looking at the landscape around the Nok Caves in Togo. From there, we all brought in our own aspects and inspiration, such as the temple on Jedha from the latest Star Wars game. This is where the idea of a temple embedded in the cliff was developed. We then find blocks that match our target, and get building!

How does the team determine who builds what?
The builds are sent out as they're received, and then we sign up to work on them! An appropriate team is then selected.

What process do you take to outline and scope out your build?
After we've got inspiration, we often start by shaping the terrain out of cobblestone before painting it afterwards. We'll then often use different coloured wool to mark out where things will go, and how big they will be.

What steps does the team take to complete build projects?
There's usually planning, terrain, exterior, interior and the final touches. The build will then be reviewed by the Builders assigned to lead the project, before going to Build leadership for final review.

How do you work through any creative problems while building?
I often mark out the problem area with a clear border, like red wool, and think about it while I work on another area. I might discuss it with others to see if they have any ideas, or come up with some ideas of my own. When an idea arrives, I return to the area and get back to it!

What are you hoping to improve in future projects based on recent content?
Having hidden a few sneaky things in the Winter Waltz build, such as the secret library cookie room, I believe these were a great part of exploration that many people have told me that they enjoyed. I'd love to add more unique features like this to future builds!

A big thank you to Jake for gracing us with such a terrific interview! If building is your cup of tea and the Build team sounds intriguing, I recommend you check out the Jr. Builder application! Jr. Builder is a non-staff position and a great opportunity to improve your building skills. I wish all that apply good luck, and to everyone else, may you have a magical day!

A Beginner's Guide: Magical Houseplants
Lifestyle
Written by Khails
Edited by bluecherub

Welcome, readers of the Daily Diviner, to the Lifestyle column! Herbology is one of the most prominent subjects in the wizarding world, and many people enjoy the company of plants, myself included.

In this article, we will explore some beginner-level magical houseplants for those interested in the art of caring for magical flora. Readers will get the opportunity to learn about their unique properties, care tips, and how they can be used in their homes. We will cover a variety of houseplants, including wormwood, betony, and flowering dogwood. Grab your gardening gloves and get ready to garden with us!

Wormwood, or Artemisia absinthium, is a versatile green leafy herb that wizards and witches use in potion making, herbology, and healing. Its distinctive leaves grow on bushes and are found worldwide.

In your garden, wormwood requires little maintenance but can become invasive if not monitored. It thrives in most climates with well-drained soil and ample sunlight. To achieve maximum potency, gardeners should wait at least two years before harvesting it, making it one of the easiest plants to care for.

In potion making, wormwood is crucial in both the Draught of Dormancy and the Euphoria Elixir. It is recommended to dilute wormwood, with the most common forms being powdered, essence, and infusion. Beyond magical uses, Unmagicals use wormwood in absinthe, anti-inflammatory medicines, and parasite treatments, showcasing its pest-repellent properties.

Betony is an herb used in vital potions, providing medicinal benefits and protection against evil spirits. Growing betony on your own is straightforward but requires careful attention.

Planting should be done in late summer where it will eventually sprout into flowers, and gardeners should cut back towards the beginning of autumn. Additionally, the soil must be rich in organic matter. Betony thrives in various types of soil, including clay and traditional soil. The leaves, which are picked before the plant blooms, are the main parts used.

While there is not an official name for the betony potion, it is commonly used as a tea. For the magical folk who enjoy drinking tea, preparing this drink is rather simple. Boil water, add betony leaves, and simmer on medium-low heat until the mixture turns a light lavender-brown. Consume the tea hot to ensure its effectiveness.

If you have an interest in trees, consider the flowering dogwood as a viable option. This plant thrives when planted outdoors alongside other trees but struggles in magical enclosures, favoring natural sunlight over magically conjured sources. Some recommend enhancing soil with ground ogre and dog bones for growth, although results can vary.

Wands crafted from flowering dogwood suit an energetic, playful caster and are lauded for loyalty to creative and eccentric wielders, excelling in charm work.

The tree’s flowers repel most potions, making them useful for potion decoration and container lining to prevent reactions. When floated on volatile potions like Exploding Dragon Extract, the flower transforms them into safe, warm substances.

In addition, the leaves, branches, and bark of the tree impart an earthy touch to potion, its fruit plays a crucial role in crafting medicinal brews for werewolves, Canidae animorphs, and reversing transformation into Canidae forms.

Any fresh green-thumbs should easily be able to grow any of these plants with the appropriate care methods and caution. With that being said, we want to remind everyone to always make sure that you read up on your magical houseplants to make sure that there is no special equipment that is needed.

We hope that you were able to find some interest within wormwood, betony, and flowering dogwood, and we wish to see your plants thrive. Thank you for taking the time to read, and I can’t wait to see you in the next edition!

A Tart to Blow You Away
Lifestyle
Written by Creme_de_Creme
Edited by littledead

Hello, lovely readers, and welcome back to the Lifestyle column! These past couple of weeks, I have been spending a lot of time in the kitchen. If you are a lover of food like myself, I highly recommend giving baking a try. A couple of the easiest things to bake are pies and tarts. Therefore, let's bake a tart together!

Before getting started, there are a couple of things you should be mindful of. For example, one of the biggest mistakes you can make in baking is forgetting to read the recipe first.

When my grandmother was teaching her daughter how to cook, my mother saw the ingredients, threw them together in a bowl, and mixed them together. It turned out to be one of the most disgusting-looking things she ever made. My mother mentioned that when her mom walked back into the kitchen to see what she made, she had the most disappointed look on her face before making her redo the whole thing. From that day on, she learned to ALWAYS read the recipe first.

When it comes to baking, that can be an even more precise science such as Chemistry or Potions; thus, emphasizing the importance of reading the recipe before baking. Any extra dashes of ingredients can change the results entirely.

That is exactly what happened to Damon Ryder. Damon loved to experiment with extra ingredients. One day, he added extra ground-up dragon tongue to a clementine tart. This resulted in what we now know as a Fireball Tart. A Fireball Tart allows its consumer to breathe fire for 34 seconds. If consumed and practiced enough, a person can learn to control the shape and color of the fire they breathe.

While you may try to change the flavor or the color of the Fireball Tart, none have been successful. It is only the combination of the clementine tart and ground-up dragon tongue that makes a Fireball Tart. The taste of a Fireball Tart mimics a slightly spicier clementine tart.

Recently, I have heard whispers regarding whether or not pies and tarts are the same thing. Never fear, dear reader! I will settle the score. While they may be considered cousins, they are not the same.

Pies have a crust on the bottom, sides, and occasionally on top, whereas tarts only have a crust on the bottom. Additionally, tarts are baked in a dish with shallow sides, unlike some of the deeper or taller pie dishes that you may encounter. Lastly, the ingredients used to make pie crusts are slightly different from the ingredients used to make a tart crust.

If learning how to bake or cook magical cuisines interests you, I highly recommend attending a class at Hogsworth. You'll learn how to make all sorts of delicious foods. In the meantime, have a wonderful day! This has been Creme_de_Creme reporting for the Daily Diviner.
