The Varulv family was founded in the sixth century by Wulfgar Varulv. The family originally lived a nomadic lifestyle; they kept along the Norwegian coastline, moving inland only during the harsh winters.

The family settled in Saltstone Landing – a small coastal Norwegian village - in 580 AD. The Varulvs were mainly farmers and fishermen, with a few family members honoring their Norse ancestry by becoming warriors – known as the úlfheðnar. They preferred using unmagical weapons, such as axes, rather than their wands. They saw dueling as cowardly; the duelist would “hide behind their wand” while fighting. The Varulvs were unable to control themselves while in their werewolf form, but that did not prevent the warriors of the family from using their lycanthropy as an advantage during battle. By the beginning of the eighth century, the majority of the Varulv family were warriors.

The Varulv family viewed lycanthropy as a blessing from Fenrir. To them, lycanthropy was a powerful tool they could use to turn a battle to their favor. To not use this gift was to dishonor Fenrir and their family. The Varulv family created a ceremony based on this belief: on the full moon after a family member's seventeenth birthday (which later changes to when they graduate from Dormunstrad), the newly-seventeen year-old stands in the middle of a clearing in the northeastern forest. They wait until a family member - the Werewolf they've chosen to bite them - finds them. They then allow the Werewolf to bite them; they can use magic to repel the Werewolf after being bitten so that they can return home without being further attacked, although most family members at Saltstone Landing refused to do so as to not appear cowardly.

The Varulv family began to fall out of favor with the village during the eleventh century, when Viking berserkers were outlawed. During full moon battles, the Varulvs would attack the other warriors, as well as the enemy. Although this was a usual casualty during these battles, it became increasingly more frequent. Before, only a few warriors would be injured; then, enemies and allies alike were in danger when the family rampaged through the battlefield. The Varulv family argued that their rampages were controlled by Fenrir, hoping that the villagers would realize they were not the mindless warriors they seemed to be. The villagers agreed that if the family was transfigured and forced into a frenzy by the son of Loki himself, there wasn't anything they could do to prevent it. The Varulv family, not wanting to endanger their community, promised to continue to leave the village and spend the night in the northeastern forest on the nights of full moons without battles. However, this did not prevent the villagers from remaining suspicious and believing the Varulv family to be nothing more than a pack of savages.

The Varulv family was exiled from Saltstone Landing on June 15, 1764: the day after the slaughter of a family of four during the full moon. The attack was out of the ordinary. Usually, hiding in the forest for the night is enough isolation from the village. However, the family that was attacked lived on the edge of the forest. The children were especially loud that night, which attracted the attention of two of the Varulv family members. The family’s house was broken into; there were no survivors. Tufts of Werewolf fur were scattered around the house, and blood was pooled around the fallen bodies. This murder angered the villagers of Saltstone Landing, especially when they heard that two of the victims were children.

The Department of Magical Law Enforcement caught up to the Varulv family three days after their exile. The family was appareoed to the Ministry’s headquarters in London. The two Varulv family members who attacked the family of four in Saltstone Landing were arrested; the rest of the Varulv family was detained until the Auralocks determined that they were innocent. The family members who attacked the family were sentenced to life in the Dark Prison.

The Varulv family had to search for a new place to live. London was too crowded, but they couldn’t travel back to Saltstone Landing. They eventually moved to Wicklow, a rural town in Ireland, where they built the family manor. Like Saltstone Landing, Werewolves were accepted as part of the community. However, the family had to be cautious; the acceptance of Werewolves was not widespread throughout the country.

Careers were hard to come by in Ireland. The Varulv family cultivated a small farm next to the Manor. However, not all family members were content with returning to their origins as farmers. Those members of the Varulv family searched for work in England. They struggled to find an employer who would overlook their condition. They soon realized that Werewolves in England were shunned from society and discriminated against to the point of homelessness and poverty.

The Varulv family was recruited as Snatchers, eventually allying themselves with - and later joining - the Dark Followers. They enjoyed chasing their targets through forests and towns, especially when their targets retaliated and cast spells back at their pursuers. During this time, the family’s opinion of dueling being cowardly was abandoned.

As of present day, members of the Varulv family no longer rely on the Dark Followers for employment. Like their ancestors, family members continue to hold independence and self-reliance as two of the most important virtues.

Family Values:
- Independence: Independence of thought and action is prioritized. One has to acquire wisdom in order to be considered completely independent. The ultimate expression of independence is the ability of a person to act wisely.
- Self-reliance: The fulfillment of personal responsibilities is extremely important. Depending on others for necessities is considered to be dangerous - it is ideal for you to be able to provide for yourself. Being unable to provide for the family is considered to be shameful.
- Perseverance: Giving up is unacceptable. You must keep trying until you either succeed or are physically unable to do so.
- Loyalty: You are to hold faithful friendships with others, but not to the friends of their enemies. You are to be unequivocally loyal to those that are close to you. You cannot develop your full potential isolated from others.
- Modesty: Wealth or financial achievements are not to be flaunted. Wealth is not to be considered a priority, as one never stays wealthy for long. Do not be greedy; guests are not to overstay their welcome.
- Hospitality/Generosity: Hosts are expected to welcome passing travelers and provide them with food and shelter, despite the travelers’ financial status. However, hosts are to never be excessively generous.
- Compassion: Everyone has a place in society, even the disabled.
- Courage: Live a courageous life, as no one can escape from death.
- Wisdom: Wisdom can only be acquired through experience, such as traveling. The only thing that lasts after death is the name of a person who lived a noble life. Staying up worrying at night is considered foolish, as the tired are less able to deal with the problem the next day; a key feature of a happy person is the ability to sleep well.
- Honor: Be true to what you believe in, and stand up for those beliefs even in the face of adversity.
- Truthfulness: Telling the truth in every situation is always the best course of action - lying is considered cowardly. However, if you are already being lied to, lying back is acceptable.
