Greetings everyone and welcome back to the 14th edition of The Weekly Owl. This past week may have started off slowly, but it’s become very busy towards the end. We have included special interviews, events, and more in this edition.

Recent Events

On March 14th, Duncan and Joel Mortemcare agreed to meet at Joel’s manor. Duncan had previously placed a curse on Keira that would lead to her death on the Ides of March (March 15th). However, if Joel sacrificed himself during this meeting Duncan would cleanse Keira of her curse. Duncan and Joel discussed the terms of their agreement, and Duncan called Keira forward to remove the curse. Strangely, Keira felt the same after being cleansed. Realising the curse was fake all along, Keira became enraged and pushed Duncan into the tent before Joel told her to stand back. Isaiah Deathrose, convict of the Ministry, then appeared, grabbing Joel. After he let Joel go, Isaiah then began firing at Duncan. Duncan used Ignis, burning Isaiah’s eyes. Joel hit Duncan with Mortiavra and stabbed him with a basilisk fang. Keira apparated Isaiah and Joel out, and search groups were sent out to find them. Keira was found tending to a wounded Joel at the Phoenix Refuge, where Valentine Deathrose came to help. Keira ignored others who came, and rushed Joel to the medical tent. The Aurorlocks insisted that they handed over Joel. Minato and Keira were both against this and attempted to fight the Aurorlocks, but the Aurorlocks eventually won. They then took Joel to the Aurorlock prisons, where he will receive a trial for his use of unforgivable curses.

March 15th was an eventful day at the Varulv Manor. McKenna Varulv, who was previously held under custody at the Werewolf base was moved illegally to the Varulv manor by Aaron Morte, a known Dark Follower. The Aurorlocks heard of this and immediately traveled to the manor. A long conversation between Ariel Vulchanova, Ivy Seymour, and Will Woodlyn began, and things eventually began to get out of hand. They called in Deputy Aurorlock Rani Lightwood to come and help. She arrived with Allan Salavik, and together, they came up with a solution. This, however, didn’t go too well. Ariel Vulchanova stepped too close to Aaron, and he casted flipellius, and this nearly led to a fight, but was promptly stopped by Deputy Rani, by ordering all Aurorlocks to leave the premises. Finally, Rani decided to place McKenna under house arrest with strict visitation rules. Only family could visit, which made McKenna and Aaron angry as he wouldn’t be able to visit her. After a heated argument, it was agreed that an exception could be granted for Aaron and he could still visit her.

On March 17th, River Woodlyn was in a cell while Will Woodlyn and Max Fireheart began to have a conversation upstairs, away from River. When they returned, they found that Monique Woodlyn was also in the prisons. Monique suddenly disappeared, leaving River feeling unwell. Max left shortly after, and Clem and Sophie Woodlyn both arrived. River complained that their eye was hurting, and suddenly their eye turned gold. They were rushed to the Ministry’s Medical Bay as the gold began to spread through their face, very quickly turning them into gold. Will and Anna Woodlyn began to take care of River, asking High Phoenix Mallaidh Callaway to come and try to help. Once it had been confirmed that River was turning into actual gold and not just changing colour, Mallaidh left for a short time to do further research. River was brought to the Phoenix Refuge, where Mallaidh returned along with other Phoenixes to try and slow down whatever was happening to River. Eventually, Will went to the Ministry with Griffin to ask Celeste Woodlyn what had happened, as she was in the cells while Monique was with River. They found out Monique had casted a curse on River, which could only be lifted by Monique herself. High Phoenix Stardust then arrived, coming up with the idea to use the Thief’s Downfall in Grimlott’s, a waterfall capable of washing all enchantments away. River, Stardust, Will, and another High Phoenix, Samuel, went there and were able to cure River. However, River still has one golden eye.

Even more occurred on March 19th. Aaron Morte had escaped the Aurorlock prisons, sending the Aurorlocks into a frenzy. They searched the Varulv Manor, where they were immediately met by Abigail Varulv. Abigail tried to force them to leave, but she ultimately failed. Deputy Aurorlock Rani Lightwood then arrived at the scene, causing McKenna Varulv to step up. She punched Robert Vulchanova, but then stepped back when she was told to by Rani. McKenna then pointed her wand at everyone present, eventually settling on Will and attempting to cast Obscurio on her. Rani blocked it with a shield charm, and then McKenna tried again to cast a spell on Will - this time, she attempted to cast Flipellius. Rani warned McKenna that if she cast again, there would be severe consequences. McKenna then cast Confundo at Will, beginning an argument between McKenna and Rani. McKenna then punched Rani in the face. Rani fell silent, and then sentenced her, saying, “By order of Rani Lightwood, Deputy Aurorlock of the Ministry, you are hereby a wanted criminal across the entire wizarding world. Your sentence? Life in the Dark Prison. Should you try to escape, you will be tracked down by the Dementares.” The Aurorlocks on the scene then escorted McKenna to the Dark Prison.

While some praise the Deputy Aurorlock for her actions against McKenna, several critics believe that it was unfair and corrupt to sentence McKenna to the Dark Prison without trial.

Interviews

This week we interviewed the Deputy Aurorlock Rani Lightwood about McKenna’s actions recently.

Q: So, first of all: what do you believe is the current state of safety surrounding the wizarding world?

A: It’s hard to put into exact words or onto a bar, but to put it as best as I can, with McKenna in custody awaiting trial, the Wizarding World is at least saver than it has been within the last few weeks. It’s not safe yet, but I don’t plan to stop until those wanted criminals still roaming the streets are captured and rightfully tried for their crimes.

Q: Moving onto my second question: Seeing this situation, do you think McKenna had any right to attack anyone at all in this situation?

A: I’ve always held the belief that violence is never the answer to any situation, and the only acceptable way to use it would be for self defence. That said, her actions are at least understandable. I’m not going to argue that some of the actions the Aurorlocks have taken have been horribly executed, or should not have done at all in the first place, so I understand her frustration and anger towards us, but still that gives her no right to cast at us. I had my hands up, attempting to talk to Abigail, and as far as I’m aware, none of the Aurorlocks had casted.

Q: And for my third question: Do you think the punishment McKenna received is the right punishment?

A: Sadly, I don’t think there is a “right punishment” for this situation, no matter how we look at it. Making the choice I did will probably remain one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do so far as the Deputy. I took no pleasure in making that call, despite what people believe. However, I was left with no choice. McKenna had been in and out of the Ministry holding cells multiple times for casting unforgivable curses, the first of which, while she was still a Phoenix, saw her released by me personally after finding evidence to suggest foul play. From there, she continued to use the curses on others despite my warning, assisted the wanted criminal Aaron Morte, had possession of a wand despite being on house arrest following a health incident, and then assaulted & casted at multiple Aurorlocks one after another. So the answer to your question, sadly, is that I don’t know whether or not it was the right call. But I’ll live with the consequences regardless, and take the guilt of making that choice to my grave.

Q: Is there anything you would like to tell me I didn't ask you?

A: The only thing that comes to mind is that there were a lot of factors that went into deciding McKenna’s fate. The decision to place her in the Dark Prison was not brought on by her slapping me, which I’ve seen people assume, but instead, it was more a trigger. As I said before, McKenna had casted multiple unforgivable curses, had escaped from prison, was being held on house arrest, and we tried to find a way to make it so she still serves her sentence, but also so that she could be with her lover, before they refused, she assisted a wanted criminal on the loose and then assaulting multiple Aurorlocks. I don’t expect people to accept my decision, but I want everyone to at least know that there was a lot more behind it then a single slap.

We also interviewed Aurorlock Maddy Woodlyn on the same situation.

Q: So first of all: what are your first thoughts on this situation?

A: I understand why her friends and pitiers may be upset, but I truly think Rani made the right decision to take Kenna to the Dark Prison. I think we should await trial before she is sentenced, but we’ll see. I do believe that Kenna needs to be sent to prison for her consistent usage of unforgivables and her treatment of the Ministry, though.

Q: Moving onto my second question: Seeing this situation, do you think McKenna had any right to attack anyone at all in this situation?

A: No, it was completely uncalled for and she should’ve thought of the consequences before acting so rashly. She was in no position to try and take on the Deputy Aurorlock like that, nor should she have assumed Rani would let it slide.

Q: For my last question: Do you think the punishment Deputy Rani gave to McKenna was the right punishment?

A: I do believe her criminal classification is well deserved, and is completely warranted. The life sentence.. I’m still trying to decide how I feel about it. Kenna and I are friends, and I know she's not a bad person. Nonetheless, she is dangerous. I think we should just be patient and wait for the trial. I’ll support whatever decision the judge makes.

Finally, we interviewed High Phoenix Mallaidh Callaway for his thoughts on the Phoenixes.

Q: What makes the Phoenixes so special? Why would you recommend people to join the Phoenixes instead of the other allegiances?

A: I feel like the Phoenixes to me have become more than just an allegiance. It began as an escape, and it has been something I could use as a starting point to rebuild my life from. I have placed trust in the ideals of the Phoenixes, and I have created great friendships here. I would recommend that other people joined Phoenixes specifically because like I said, we have become more than an allegiance to each other really - I've even heard us be compared to somewhat of a family. I only hope that others who choose to join us can experience the same, and are able to find the Phoenix ideas as something they too can place great trust in and learn from.”

Q: To come back on the topic of the Phoenix’s ideas, What ideas do you feel like/think the Phoenixes are trying to spread? And do you feel like the Phoenixes have gained more attention by spreading these ideas?

A: I believe the Phoenixes are trying to spread in a way, an idea of peace. The ideology of the Phoenixes is quite difficult to pin down, as to me I think it can be very dependent on the situation. What I can say is, one of our ideas is the idea of being devoted to always making sure our decisions are planned out and not acting irresponsibly - I think that is something we try to spread to our members, as well as ordinary members of the wizarding world. Planning and avoiding acting without thinking are great skills that anyone, magical or unmagical, can aspire to have. I believe we are also committed to creating justice - perhaps not as much as the Aurorlocks are, but we are able to deliver our own idea of justice when possible. I think spreading these ideas has brought us some attention, particularly by those interested in joining us. However, in a way the fact that we do not act so easily can keep us in the shadows a small amount. I think in a way we do benefit from that, although it can discourage some people from joining us as they believe we do not ever act.

Q: Since you were talking about taking action, what kind of big acts, or acts in general have the Phoenixes performed that you know off?

A: I'm not too sure of what we've been up to recently, however, I know that we have taken some larger actions in the past. A great example of how our ideals play into our actions is if we come across someone who is causing great deals of trouble and harming those around us, we have in the past taken these people in and helped them grow tremendously to be a better person who contributes in lfife. More recently, we have allied with the werewolves and also overall played a significant part in a few battles, especially with the Dark Followers.
