wont connect to server

it registered the server but keeps telling me it cant connect to the world, what can i do to fix this? my minecraft version is 1.12.2 and im connected to wifi (obviously)

Are you using the Windows 10 edition of minecraft when connecting? The server only works with clients that use Java Edition.

how do i check? i downloaded minecraft from the microsoft store only a couple days ago, and if i am using windows 10 version, how do i change it to java?
