Academics Weekly Assignment – February 20th, 2022

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of February 20th, 2022! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Ancient Runes - Nordic Compass” created by Arne (tqrpiar).

The assignment is as follows:
Information
A Nordic Compass, also called the Vegvisir, is a runic compass from the Viking era with 8 Viking rune staves—symbols that are said to carry magic. The compass is believed to be a symbol of protection and guidance for Vikings.

As Vikings often sailed and traveled through hard weather conditions, this compass would keep them on track to get through storms. Even if they didn’t know the way, this item would lead them through.

There are a couple of sources that mention the Vegvisir, one of these being the Huld Manuschript by Geir Vigfusson. It was created in 1880 and there the Vegvisir translates to: “The wearer of this symbol will not lose his way during storms and bad weather, even if he does not know of his destination”.

Another translation was made in Galdrabok. There it states that the symbol will help the wearer to not get lost and find their way back. What misses from this translation of the promise of protection, the Galdrabok ensures protection when the Vegvisir gets drawn in blood on a person’s forehead.

Assignment
You’re venturing out on a long trip and are carrying a Vegvisir around your neck. When sailing the sea with your fellow Vikings, a massive storm breaks loose and the tides are heavy. How do you all get out of this? Does the Vegvisir help you in this situation?
