Academics Weekly Assignment — April 3rd, 2022

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of April 3rd, 2022! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Mythology - Jörmungandr” created by Arne (tqrpiar).

The assignment is as follows:
Background
Jörmungandr is a sea serpent which stems from Norse mythology. This creature is known by two other titles, these being the ‘Midgard Serpent’ and ‘World Serpent’. Jörmungandr is said to be one of the six children Loki has. Odin took the matter into his own hands as the creature was becoming dangerous and threw Jörmungandr into the ocean circling Midgard.

Jörmungandr kept growing and growing. Eventually it grew so large that it was able to reach its own tail. Due to the fact that Jörmungandr is able to circle the Earth, it has rightfully earned the name of ‘World Serpent’.

There are a few myths surrounding Jörmungandr. One of these myths is called ‘Thor’s fishing trip’ where Jörmungandr kills Thor himself. Thor demanded to sail out further than he was told. He cut off one of Hymir’s oxes and used its head as bait.

When Jörmungandr bit the bait, Thor pulled the serpent out of the water. While both are powerful beings, when they were put face to face, Jörmungandr spat out poison and killed Thor.

Assignment
Create an entire new story about how Jörmungandr kills Thor, or the other way around where Thor kills Jörmungandr. How did it happen? Most importantly, who won?
