Academics Weekly Assignment — February 13th, 2022

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of February 13th, 2022! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Mythology - Jötunn” created by Leo (LeoTheLynx).

The assignment is as follows:
Information
Jötunn are an old species contrasted to gods in Norse mythology. Although in some texts, those creatures are also called Giants, they are not necessarily big creatures. Furthermore, the origin of the Jötunn comes from an old living being called Ymir. Ymir, also called Aurgelmir, was a former giant being, with an ice appearance that created the Jötunn from the growth of its own body. Ymir was eventually destroyed by the gods, and its body was used to create and shape the world as we know.

One of the most famous Giants is Aegir, the personification of the sea, and was adored by the vikings, who were seeking for a good sail on their journeys. However, one of the most famous and controversial Jötunn is Loki. He was the son of the Jötunn Fárbauti and the goddess Laufey. In the end, Loki’s relationship with the gods varies, being an ally to Thor and Odin, or being an enemy that defeated the god Balder, son of Odin.

Assignment
Imagine that you met Loki during an adventure. Would you fear him? Would you attack him as your enemy, or try to make him an ally? What happens next?
