Academics Weekly Assignment — June 26th, 2022

Welcome to the Academics weekly assignment for the week of June 26th, 2022! These weekly assignments will give our Professors the ability to showcase some of their lesson ideas here on the website. Each assignment will be posted for a week, in which everyone will be able to read about the topic and respond to the assignment prompt. This week's assignment is "Dark Arts - Grieving Goblets" created by Lyra (myriadofanger).

The assignment is as follows:
Background
Overview:
Stemming from unknown origins, the Grieving Goblets are no laughing matter. In total, there are four goblets, each in a different color. There is red, green, blue, and yellow, and the four goblets are usually seen together. Originally, the goblets were simply that. They were handcrafted, assumed to be by a Celtic craftsperson, using precious metals and jewels. However, the goblets were intercepted by a pirate whose ship soon sank. In 1727, the goblets were discovered and sold to a noble family where their dark potential would soon reign.

Dark Origins:
The noble family who bought the Grieving Goblets, though not yet named that, was known to host elaborate dinner parties for all to attend. They had a wonderful reputation until the youngest child had come to a realization. They didn’t fit in. The family seemed to be entirely different from them. The young child turned to the Dark Arts, cursing the goblets. Instead of simply being a vessel for a lovely drink, the goblet now began to slowly poison the substance, leading the drinker to a slow, painful death as Dark Magic consumes them. The noble family perished, and the youngest child fled to never be seen again.

It is incredibly difficult to detect the venomous attributes of the goblets unless one is also using Dark Magic. This is how the Ministry of Magicians lost the goblets. The goblets were simply kept with other evidence of the murder that night, as the goblets weren’t suspected of being the weapon. Years later, a ministry worker who reopened the case discovered the goblet's secrets. They stole them and sold the Grieving Goblets onto the marketplace to recirculate through dark circles. The cups still remain today, floating through each dark wizard’s hands to claim another to its poisonous touch.

Assignment
What do you think about the Grieving Goblets? Do you think they are interesting artifacts, or do you despise their existence? Would you side with the Ministry and try to stop their circulation, or would you follow in the dark footsteps and use the goblets for your own use?
