Game Design Blog - Potions

Hello everyone! Welcome back to yet another Directium Deep Dive! So far, we’ve discussed Herbology and the Mob Revamp! Next up, let’s take a look at our next core profession system: Potions!

Design Philosophy
When it came to designing potions, we wanted a system that was fun and responsive to player choice. Not only that, but we wanted to ensure that potions could be used in a variety of ways, including for combat and for more quest-based elements, as well as our Living World Initiative. We also have heard the feedback over the years that some players miss having more of the “fun” potions in the world. As such, we’ve taken all of that into account and created the system that we’re about to dive into now!

Core Potion Design
Our core potion system is designed so that you can find your nearest cauldron, and put up to five items into the pot - And then click it to brew your potion instantaneously! No matter what items you put in, you’ll always receive a potion back - We wanted to make sure that there was no true “fail state”. You may not always end up with the potion you intended, but you’ll always walk away from a cauldron with something in your hand.

Potion Ingredients
Potion Ingredients have several categories - Mob Drops, Refined Mob Drops, and Herbology Plants. Even so, these items have a variety of properties, all of which come in handy when it comes to brewing new potions.

Mob Drops are the items that mobs across the world will drop. As discussed last week, mobs now have types, such as “Poison” or “Water”, and every mob has one unique mob drop. Some recipes will require pure mob drops - or any mob drop of a certain “type”.

We also recognize that as you level up, you’ll likely not need some of the mob ingredients - As such, Potioneers have seen fit to design a Miniature Potioneering set - which allows you to turn 3 mob drops of any one type of mob into what we’re calling a “Refined” Mob drop. This allows you to re-use those lower-level drops in higher-level potions, so they’ll never go to waste! Take a look at our example below:

Here, I have a large number of “Undead” ingredients in my inventory - But I no longer need them! Instead, I’m going to refine them down into an Undead Sublimate, which I can then throw into the Cauldron as an ingredient!

Lastly, we have Herbology Ingredients, which you’ll need to obtain from the Herbology Profession.

All together, you’ll need a wide variety of ingredients to make all sorts of potions. The good news is that once you’ve brewed a potion, you’ll unlock the specific recipe so you know how to make that specific potion in the future. You may blow up a few cauldrons along the way, but you’ll find yourself making powerful potions in no time!

That’s it for now! We’ll have a lot more to share in the coming weeks, as we get closer to our first playtest. We’re extremely excited to show you all what we’ve been working on, and we’ve been putting all of our energy towards this showcase to present what Directium can be.
