House points are tracked per quarter of the year to follow the structure of the house cup, which happens from January to March, from April to June, from July to September and from October to December.
House points are tracked for multiple reasons, such as daily activities, classes, challenges and even gameplay elements when you complete certain things, such as finding the pet of the Headmistress in this year's Winter Waltz.
You can always do /hp in-game to see how many points you have earned this quarter, as well as the total amount of points you have earned to this day.
