Preparing for 1.18 [Updated Tuesday November 4 2025 - 0840 PST]

[Updated Tuesday November 4 2025 - 0840 PST]

Update: Potterworld will be re-opening tomorrow (Wednesday November 5) PST.

We have concluded our initial testing of both the server and the new levelling experience, and are now beginning to let staff back in assist with build edits and testing.

The Build team will use the next 12-24 hours to finish key build edits before we re-open. In the mean time we will continue to migrate the Classes system in aims of resuming classes tomorrow too!

We thank everyone for their patience thus far, and we're excited to have everyone join us in 1.18 very soon!

[Updated Monday November 3 2025 - 0530 PST]

Update: Our testing thus far has been going well! We have our first 1.18 live worlds running now, complete with the new levelling experience.

Over the next 12-24 hours we will continue to test the new levelling experience and other 1.18 changes. Whilst this is ongoing, we will begin migrating our classes server and complete any remaining database chores.

We are aiming to provide an update tomorrow as to when Potterworld will reopen, however our approach will likely be staggered, with classes, minigames, and housing all returning incrementally as we complete our migrations on them.

[Updated Sunday November 2 2025 - 1437 PST]

Update: We have a couple of servers running on 1.18 now on which staff are verifying and making adjustments.

All general data migrations and conversions have now completed. Next steps are to do more verification on the backend and to migrate more servers. We also have some challenges to solve regarding the housing plots as those cannot reasonable all be prepared during the maintenance.

[Updated Sunday November 2 2025 - 0822 PST]

Progress update: we have migrated all our internal data to the new minecraft version names and structures. We are in the process of doing the same player data such as inventories.

The first backend servers are now running on 1.18 and expect to be able to allow some staff on for build checking, testing and adjustments to those servers in the next few hours.

All in all we're going at a steady pace, with migration tasks taking a good chunk of time but we're not running into any major issues.

[Updated Saturday November 1 2025 - 1512 PDT]

Update: We are steadily making progress. Housing backups are still going, which takes a while with around 90 thousand housing plots totalling over a million files and almost a Terabyte of data.

GD remains hard at work on the Levelling Update. Most preparations for the first 1.18 servers have finished and will be started in the CEST morning to perform the next stages of the upgrade works.

The server upgrade maintenance has now begun. Updates will be posted when major milestones have been reached.

[Updated Saturday October 25 2025]

A reminder that we will be putting the server into maintenance mode on November 1 at 12:00AM PST in order to complete our upgrade to versions 1.18.2 and 1.21.10 of Minecraft.

We are also excited to announce that we will be enabling support for players to connect to Potterworld using the latest version of Minecraft, 1.21.10, in addition to versions 1.18.2, 1.21.8, and 1.21.9.

During this maintenance, the entire server will be offline and players will not be able to connect. This includes the hub and minigames. Our website, store and Discord Bot will also be unavailable. All updates will be posted in the #maintenance channel on our Discord server.

Hello Witches and Wizards!

The Developer team is extremely excited today to announce the formal roadmap for Potterworld’s transition to 1.18. After almost four years of work, we have come an extremely long way, and we are now ready to begin our final preparations.

On October 31 at 11:59PM PST, we will be placing Potterworld into maintenance mode. This will allow us to complete the official migration to 1.18. We expect this migration period to last anywhere from a minimum of three days. During this time voting streaks will be paused.

While Potterworld is in maintenance mode we will be upgrading key infrastructure as well as doing a full conversion of all playerdata to migrate all inventories, enderchests and bags to be 1.18 compatible. This will result in some downtime across all our services (such as the website and Discord Bot). At this time we will also be converting Housing plots to 1.18. However please note that 1.18 items will not be available on Housing initially.

To ensure minimum disruption, we have been working behind the scenes to pre-emptively upgrade our worlds in order to allow us to switch them on. This also enables us to conduct essential build repairs, as we have found that whilst migrating worlds, Minecraft decides to ‘randomly’ break a lot of blocks.

As recently announced, we are planning to add support for players to connect to Potterworld on both 1.18.2 and 1.21.8 (latest).
However please be aware that the base Potterworld version is 1.18, meaning only 1.18 blocks and features will be available on the server itself.

We would also like to disclose that our philosophy for this upgrade process has been to get 1.10 Potterworld to work on 1.18. This means that presently we do not utilise any new 1.18 features yet, however over the coming months you can expect to see exciting new pieces of gameplay that give into 1.18’s features!

Finally we understand that some players may wish to join the Hub and play minigames during the maintenance period. Initially we will not be able to support this due to the infrastructure upgrades that we will be performing, however as the maintenance goes on, we may revisit this!

If you have any other questions feel free to reply below and we will address them here or in further announcements as we get closer to the maintenance period.

We're currently looking into this one. There's a few issues of backwards compatibility that we're experiencing, but we are trying to resolve them. We'll likely send out an update next weekend with the latest information as we approach 1 week from the update time!
