New Head of Community Management
Feature
Written by Silquer
Edited by bluecherub

Hello, my dear readers, and welcome back to the Daily Diviner! Change is afoot on Potterworld, and one addition to Head Staff has recently been announced.

Congratulations to jake_ft for joining the ranks as the Head of Community Management! In light of his new position, I had the honor of interviewing Jake about his time as a part of Community Management and his new position.

Jake has been on the team for over two years since he joined as a Jr. Prefect. After becoming a Lead Prefect and later Assistant to Head of Community Management, it was only a matter of time before making the jump to Head of the department. Jake talked about his time in the department, saying:

I've always enjoyed helping people, both in-game and in general life, so being able to handle tickets and guide new players and staff is always really rewarding.
Community Management is an incredible department for its dedicated members! Their hard work is what keeps Potterworld running; without them, we would all be lost… literally! The gentle guidance of the members of Community Management is what helps many players early on.

Additionally, it seems that players are not the only ones that are appreciative of the Community Management department!

I've learned a lot about the server as a whole and the amount of time that the members of all of the teams dedicate to create such a wide range of content. The leadership and coordination of everything takes a huge amount of work, and I'm extremely grateful to be able to contribute to that at the Head Staff level!
However, even after years of experience, a new position can be daunting. Being a Head of a department brings in a whole new set of challenges to face, so it calls into question: how is he feeling about this transition? He commented:

I'm really excited to be in this position, and I'm looking forward to bearing the torch that Erica has carried in leading the department! Having been on the prefect team for a long time, a lot of my work as Head so far has been learning the Scribe team, and I'm super excited that we were able to release Scribe Publisher applications just a couple of weeks ago!
Of course, we are all looking towards the future. As Jake mentioned, Scribe Publisher applications are open, meaning the team is expanding and welcoming in new members. This is an exciting time, and I highly encourage any interested to check out the applications on the website! He elaborated on the future of the department, saying:

Like many members of the department, I see CM as the staff hub for helping players and ensuring the community are having a good time. With Scribe Publisher applications open, I'm hoping to grow both the Scribe team and the wiki to enable us to create more useful pages to both help players and also share some of the amazing content from other teams like lore and Arithmancer screenshots of our builds! We have some exciting plans for the future of Scribe, and I can't wait to see them unfold.
This has been an informative interview! A huge thanks to Jake for offering his time in this interview and giving us all an insight into his new position. We at Daily Diviner wish him nothing but the best as a Head, and we are excited to see the new heights that Community Management will reach!

Academics Updates Aplenty
Editorial
Written by snotflower
Edited by Silquer

Welcome back to the Editorial column! October was an exciting month for Potterworld, bringing a variety of updates and events. Academics was no stranger to this, as it delivered many anticipated changes as well. If this has piqued your curiosity, look no further! Read on to discover what Academics was up to over the past month.

Wizard’s PE had one of the most notable updates, bringing many new maps and quality-of-life changes. For those unaware, Wizard’s PE is a parkour-focused class that has students racing to the end, not only against each other but also themselves in an attempt to beat their best times. As someone who has always loved this class, I was eager to see the new additions, and I was not disappointed!

The Schools Map takes students through a few of the most notable magical schools across the world! Leaping through the unique architecture of each school is a lovely experience and serves as a nice distraction from some of the more difficult jumps. After traveling through the different locations, the end of the map is a comforting and familiar sight, bringing students to Hogsworth’s Great Hall for the final stage.

The Roleplay Bases Map features the home turf of Potterworld’s various allegiances. While it is a bit easier overall, it is not without its own difficulties—the last stage is especially tricky! As someone who has never seen most of the allegiance bases, I enjoyed discovering them as I completed the map.

Last but certainly not least, the Corridors Map is a tough leap through a giant, winding hallway. It challenges students in all sorts of parkour skills and proves immensely satisfying to conquer. Those who manage to reach the end will find a massive cake waiting for them!

Alongside these brand-new maps, many familiar maps were also updated with new scenery, including Whales, Story, and Wipeout. My personal favorite of these three is Whales, which features a beautiful and atmospheric undersea journey.

While the map updates are very exciting, fans of the class will also enjoy the numerous quality-of-life additions brought with this update. For example, holograms have been added to each stage that provide important information, such as the number of Academic Credits earned and the time left in the class. I especially appreciate the new automatic announcements whenever someone finishes a course, which is not only convenient for students but for the Professor and Class Helpers as well!

Wizard’s PE was not the only update, as Academics announced a brand-new shop as well: the AC Shop! Accessible via the shop button in /me, there are a variety of collectables, banners, and exclusives to purchase using Academic Credits. As someone who loves to attend classes but has not had much use for my Academic Credits, I welcome this shop as a source of long-term goals. Purchasing everything may be quite the expensive endeavor, but every class means I get a step closer!

One of my favorites in the AC shop is the Foam Hand, which can serve as the ‘raise hand’ function in class! I also love the #1 Fan Emote, as it allows me to celebrate my friends. Finally, The Drooble-dance collectable summons a disco ball in the sky, perfect for an impromptu dance party!

Lastly, a smaller but important update came in the form of the Extra Credit Taskboard. This was adjusted to have three tiers in each category, with House points as a reward for completing tier three! I appreciate this change, as it provides more to aim for and more chances to earn Academic Credits, which is especially helpful alongside the new AC Shop.

These Academics updates are truly spectacular! From Wizard’s PE to the new AC Shop, there are a myriad of changes even the most seasoned student can appreciate. Make sure to check out these changes in-game to see them in their full glory! Thank you to the Academics team and everyone who worked on the updates. Have a magical day!

Seeking Seafarers: the Pirating Economy at a Glance
Server Spotlight
Written by bluecherub
Edited by snotflower

Ahoy, maties, and welcome to this issue’s edition of the Server Spotlight column. Today, we venture into the dire straights of an ancient wizarding industry: piracy.

Thievery is as old as life itself, and there is no better place to hide than offshore. Better yet, there is no greater pirate than one who makes use of magic to assist in their schemes. Pulling off a heist is no easy task, and within this long-standing industry, one needs every peg leg up they can get.

Pursuing professional piracy in the modern day and age has changed greatly in the last 200 years. In an industry which is sink or swim, cutthroat tactics have led to a dwindling pool of opportunity. Where one could simply collect their wand and set off for a grungy town in the old days, now any plucky pirate pupil must have a number of qualifications.

Magical creature experts who specialize in aquatic and seafaring creatures are always in high demand. Such pirates must be capable of handling both the shallow water’s Kelpies and Murtletts as well as the deep water’s Mermaids. One need not have perfect expertise on Wyrm breeding season nor Dragon migrations, but such a broad knowledge base is a bonus!

Avoiding deep sea krakens from below and drones of Dragons from above can keep a ship floating for months longer than the next expertless ship.

However, most would-be pirates dream of far more treasured positions than that. First mate positions in particular see applications aplenty. One must have a strategic mind far greater than the average deck-swabber for such a strategic role, as well as strong leadership qualities for wrestling a motley crew into submission.

These popular pirating positions aside, there are a handful of general qualifications which can place a person far closer to the peak of piracy and therefore ease their transition into such a tightly competitive field.

Wizards in possession of a horned serpent horn wand core are welcomed into the field with open arms, as these wands lend themselves to sneakiness and skulduggery; it also packs a powerful punch, making it an excellent partner in battle on the high seas.

It is no shock either to run into a sailor with a Kelpie mane wand core, which has long been associated with seafarers. The wanderlust that often possesses those with this core is second only to those pirates’ lust for gold.

Outside of these common qualifications, those who can sing a sea shanty or maintain stealth for sneakier situations are always welcome. Squalus Cove residents in particular can always find a familiar face in professional piracy.

The competition is nonetheless steep. There are strong monopolies following the disbanding of mutinied parties and quite literally cutthroat methods of contending pirate bands. In particular, Shark Beard’s band, which are known to haunt the coasts of Gnollberg port, have a strong hold on the northern shores of England.

As for job security, there is unfortunately not a great deal of it. Some pirates live to tell the tale, but it is often those who do not whose tales get told most often. Captain Galen Draven of Squalus Cove famously died in pursuit of the Seven Jewels. Captain Dany Moore was driven mad drifting across The Dark Prison’s waters and threw himself and his crew into a magical creature’s greed-laden trap. Entire crews, like those on the Bloody Beacon, enter the waves only to return as blasted ghosts begging for release.

However, the risk can sometimes be worth the reward. Piracy, while a dangerous profession, does not exclude one from the possibility of lifelong romance. Lovers left ashore are not uncommon for the romantically inclined pirate. Neither does it inherently come with a sacrifice of familial relations, as there have been several infamous heists pulled off by powerful pirate families, inspiring many a generation of scallywag.

While the pirating industry has seen a stark subtraction in applicants, there is still much to be gained. Treasures both long-forgotten and desperately sought are spread across the magical world, and magical pirates will likely always exist because of it.

Now avast, ye swabs, and see you on the high seas.

Fantastic Fall Fun
Lifestyle
Written by snotflower
Edited by littledead

Welcome back to the Lifestyle column! November has just arrived, which means fall is in full swing. Leaves are shifting colors, there is a cool breeze in the air, and there is much to do! As with every season, there are a myriad of different fall activities to try, but with so many possibilities on the list, it may seem overwhelming. Fear not, dear reader! Read on to discover some of my favorite things to do during autumn.

There is never a bad time for the classics. I recommend taking some time to go shopping in Diagonal Lane, where there are always some fun fall-themed items to find. For those with a sweet tooth, baking apple- or pumpkin-centric treats is always a deliciously satisfying activity. If you have the itch to travel, there are numerous towns across the United Kingdom that look lovely this time of year, such as Appleby and Griffin’s Hollow.

Whether you have a green thumb or not, fall is a wonderful time to begin gardening. Tormentil, a common herb in many potions, is best sown around now. Flower bulbs such as tulips and daffodils should also be planted during this season so that they sprout in the spring. It is also ideal to plant trees such as rowan and maple in the fall.

If baking is not for you, I suggest trying some treats from various shops around the wizarding world. For example, Soph’s Boba has a perfect fall-themed flavor: persimmon! In Wigtown, the award-winning Brimbles’ Bagels has a butterbrew-infused bagel, great for warming you up during cold mornings.

Looking for something more exciting? Quabbleball has always got your back! Though you can certainly spectate the games at Hogsworth, I encourage attending games at other schools as well. It is always interesting to see the various strategies employed in Quabbleball games across the world. Kilwin’s School for Sports and Recreation in New Zealand is especially fascinating, as the competitiveness in its players can be extreme, even leading to cheating and violence.

For those who like to explore, fall is the perfect time for a backpacking trip across the UK. Take your broom or utilize the Fire Dust Network to get halfway there, then venture off the trodden path, deep into nature! The mountains near Eldham Ridge are a great place to start, with various trails and caves to hike through.

However, make sure to pack well, as nights can get rather cold so far from civilization. Always be on the lookout for magical beasts as well—while some may be friendly, creatures such as Trolls and Demoxies will be incredibly hostile toward anyone treading on their territory.

If you are stuck at Hogsworth or at home, there is still much for you to do! Stargazing is one of my favorite activities this time of year. Peer into your telescope and try to spot patterns amongst the twinkling stars. Andromeda, Cassiopeia, and Pegasus are some constellations you can see during autumn, though there are many others as well.

Last, but certainly not least, cold water plunges are an electrifying activity that I recommend anyone try at least once. Though they are often done in the winter, fall is just as good of a time and also a bit safer. You can take this plunge in any body of water, but make sure to ensure there are no dangers at your location of choice. The Daily Diviner takes no responsibility for any reader whose poor research leads them to be dragged away by Grindlings!

These are only a few of the many, many different activities you can do during fall! The list is truly endless. I hope some of these piqued your interest and that you might try them out yourself or with a friend! Out of everything, the most important thing is to have fun and always stay safe. Thank you for reading, and have a magical day!
