Head of Build: jake_ft

Hello, my dear readers, and welcome back to the Daily Diviner! Changes are afoot on Potterworld, and the Build team has welcomed in a new Head of the department. Stepping into this role is jake_ft, a longtime member of Potterworld staff and the Build department especially. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jake on his new position, including a look into Jake’s career in the department and future plans for Build!

Jake became a member of the Build team in July of 2022 and was promoted to Lead Architect at the beginning of this year (2025)! In regards to the past few years being part of Build, Jake said:
My time on the team has been great - through build sessions and group projects I've met a ton of awesome people, some who I now talk to daily! It has also been really rewarding to work on builds that actually get used for something bigger than just me building them - such as events, classes and more!

So much work goes on behind the scenes to make Potterworld as immersive as possible. Potterworld is, quite literally, built on the work of these staff members! Of course, I had to find out which of Jake’s projects have been among his favorites:
I really enjoy the variety of different builds. I've worked on things ranging from the galactic starcruiser, to a variety of magical schools with different architectural styles. It's challenging to adapt to different styles, but also really fun!

We are all wondering about the future projects Build has planned. What new architectural masterpieces await us players? What exciting environments will we be able to explore? Looking to the future, Jake said:
I'm really looking forward to completing our Hogsend revamp for the playtest that Game Design are planning. Beyond that, I hope to be able to work on some more minigame maps and miscellaneous projects!

Jake elaborated on the Hogsend revamp, saying:
It's a huge collaboration of the entire team, and brings detail to a whole new level. It's a breath-taking build and I can't wait to release it!

It sounds like Build has been hard at work preparing something incredible for players! If creating the architecture that makes up Potterworld fascinates you, perhaps you would be interested in becoming a part of the Build department! If you are, Jake has these encouraging words for anyone looking to apply:
Go for it! You don't have to be the best builder ever to apply - I certainly wasn't! I've learned so much on the team, and gained so much from the people within it. If you enjoy building and playing Potterworld, why not mix the two and join the team?!

Please join us in wishing Jake all the best in this new position! Under new leadership, I know the Build team will flourish and continue creating new places for us to explore. If you are looking to apply for Build, the application for Builder can be found here. Any players are welcome to apply; good luck if you do, and happy building!

The Daily Diviner will be moving to a monthly publishing schedule. You can expect a new issue at the end of every month!

Exploring Magical Diseases
Editorial
Written by snotflower
Edited by Calliequeen

Welcome back to the Editorial column of the Daily Diviner! While the wizarding world is advanced in many ways compared to its Unmagical counterpart, one aspect that often eludes even the smartest of magicians is its diseases. With the unique nature of magic comes unique illnesses, and it is important for readers to be aware of potential diseases they could contract in their everyday lives.

To aid me in this article, I enlisted the help of a Merlin’s Magical Hospital doctor, who has kindly agreed to explain a few magical diseases. Read ahead for the fascinating interview!

The first disease I wanted to discuss today is the Fire Lung Disease. Can you tell us a bit about it?
Ah, yes. Fire Lung Disease is caused by an excessive or improper use of Fire Dust, which all readers should know is a very common mode of transportation. It can be quite severe, with symptoms such as a burning in the chest, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, and even lung failure.
How horrible! Do you recommend avoiding Fire Dust, then?
For the most part, Fire Dust is harmless, so readers should have no real cause for concern. I even used it to travel to this interview today! It’s only when used dangerously, such as inhaling it, especially when it is catching fire, that it becomes a hazard to its users.
That is quite the relief to hear. Who could have thought such a disease was lurking in something many of us use daily?
It is certainly something we should all be aware of. Luckily, if caught early, rest and medicinal potions are likely to heal most wizards with the disease. However, those in later-stages may suffer long-term health issues or even face death. Remember to always use Fire Dust properly, folks!
Next, Gnomification has had quite the spotlight on it over the years, but many wizards know little about it. Could you shed some light on what it entails?
Gnomification is an unfortunate disease transferred to humans who interact with Gnomes for over 30 days. Over the course of three months, those infected will gradually turn into gnomes, including speech, appearance, and behavioral changes, eventually becoming the inanimate objects we often see in gardens.
What a strange disease! I’m sure many busy readers might have Gnomes they do not even know of living in their gardens right now. How can they prevent themselves from getting Gnomification?
Simply having a Gnome or two in one’s garden is not enough to get the disease. It requires extensive contact with Gnomes, such as inviting them in for tea, and having more than five in one’s garden. However, I still recommend readers degnome their gardens periodically, and make sure to sanitize regularly throughout the process.
Is there a cure, or are those infected doomed to be gnomes forever?
We are very fortunate to have a Detransfiguration incantation, invented by Adelaide Morrison (a personal hero of mine!). Not only did she teach this cure to the wizarding world, but she also opened the School for Degnomification as well as established a subdepartment for it at Merlin’s. While it is still wise to be careful of the disease, rest easy knowing there is an effective cure for it.
Finally, I wanted to discuss the Wayward Wand Disease. What exactly is this disease, and how do wizards get it?
Typically, when a wizard uses another’s wand, there may be slight discomfort but no further issues. However, some wizards are particularly incompatible with some wands, and the wand may lash out. The more the wand is used, the worse the symptoms get, and eventually it may kill its user.
How would someone know they have the disease, and is there any way to prevent it once infected?
Those who have only used the wand once or twice may experience headaches and hand aches. At this point, simply stop using the wand and they should be back to normal soon. Unfortunately, if the disease progresses, they will have uncontrollable migraines and be unable to sleep, and at this point, death is likely. There is no cure once the disease has reached later stages.
With that, the interview concluded. I hope this was an enlightening look into some magical diseases! Remember to always be careful, keep an eye out for any symptoms, and make sure to visit a doctor if you think you may be sick. Thank you for reading, and stay healthy!

Starting Year 5 Strong
Server Spotlight
Written by snotflower
Edited by Calliequeen

Welcome back to the Server Spotlight Column! Continuing our look-back at quests throughout the school years, today readers can reminisce about (or see for the first time) the first three quests of Year 5! While they all continue the trend of helping someone out, they are also very mysterious in nature… Read on for a dive into the quests Dalia’s Box, Relics of the Past - Part II, and Heist of Darkness!

The first quest of Year 5 is Dalia’s Box, which starts in Squalus Cove and has the player seek out the eponymous character, Dalia. As one could guess from the quest’s title, Dalia has found a mysterious box that she cannot open, and she enlists the player’s help in doing so! It’s up to the player to figure out the meaning behind the inscription on the box and discover what is inside once and for all.

The main difficulty of this quest is solving the riddle on the box, which has proven quite tricky for many players. While I will not spoil the answer here, I suggest any frustrated player attend a few Magical Creature Studies classes; perhaps that will inspire them in their search… Once the box has been opened, Dalia rewards the player with some Gold, Experience, and the satisfaction of a job well done.

Next, Relics of the Past - Part II continues Part I from Year 3. Once again, the player must seek out Zin, who is now looking for a relic somewhere in Squalus Cove. If you agree to help in his search, he sends you to Dalia, who should now be a familiar face! Dalia has made good progress in the hunt, but cannot figure out the final steps in obtaining the relic, which is where the player steps in to help.

This quest leads the player to the sewers, which may seem unsanitary, but that should be of no concern for a treasure hunter, right? If the player manages to find the treasure, they can return to Dalia, who passes it along to Zin and provides Gold and Experience as a worthy reward! For those interested in continuing this intriguing questline, Part III is a Year 7 quest, so unfortunately, it does require some waiting. Luckily, there is plenty to do in the meantime!

Finally, the last quest we will look at today is Heist of Darkness! This quest is one of my favorites, so it is certain to be an exciting experience for players as well. Heist of Darkness starts in a spooky pub in London, called the Crooked Crossroads. Here, a man named Swiper is looking for help in retrieving a powerful item from the Dark Followers.

Once accepted, the player must find the aptly named Mysterious Manor— a creepy, looming mansion with an even creepier dungeon in its basement. Here, you will search for clues about the item and complete a tricky parkour, which is something I particularly enjoyed as a parkour enthusiast. If you manage to return to Swiper in one piece, you once again receive Gold and Experience, as well as the ability to use Swiper’s Oar Warp Key to return to the manor in the future!

I hope you enjoyed a look at the first three quests of Year 5! They all involve solving mysteries and finding strange objects, which is quite an exciting start to the year. If you have not, I recommend you give them a try, and if you have, I hope it was fun to reminisce! Thank you for reading, and have a magical day!
