Department Updates - August
Feature
Edited by Silquer
Hello, my dear readers, and welcome back to the Daily Diviner! This month features some big updates. Read on to hear about this exciting month!

General Updates
On August 1st, a Potterworld 2.0 progress update was announced! This update provided some new insight into the features we will see in 2.0. An emphasis was placed on custom animations, both for mobs and the environment itself! This post also introduced new broom flight mechanics, NPCs that will follow and guide players, and the promise of classic builds reimagined. Read the full post here, or watch the video featuring the progress here, for even more detail about this exciting progress.

Quabbleball makes a triumphant return! At last, players can once again enjoy this action-packed minigame, with a small adjustment to make it playable. The Searcher role has been removed due to the Swippet not functioning in Minecraft version 1.18, but the game remains unchanged otherwise! It is wonderful to see this classic minigame return. Click here for the full post!

On August 11th, Build announced its new Assistant to Head: CraftyKanna! Kanna has worked on some incredible projects over the years, and we cannot wait to see what she will do as Assistant. Click here for the full post. Congratulations to Kanna!

New School Supplies, New Friends
Editorial

Achava squared their shoulders and marched into the bookstore. They ignored the impulse to glance back at The Cauldron Inn, where their mother waited. Achava, about to start their second year, was determined to succeed in school shopping alone. They would not fail.

Crouched in front of the Potions section, Achava heard someone close behind cheerfully announce, “Excuse me!” and reach over their head. The nerve! Achava spun, nearly toppling over, to glare at the kid behind them.

“Hi, I’m Rhododendron!” Rhododendron smiled broadly. “Or Rhodey. I’m a third year. What’s your name?”

“I’m busy,” Achava sniffed and shouldered past her. “I have lots of shopping to do.”

To their irritation, Rhodey followed them to the checkout counter. “You’re so serious. What’s the rush? It’s just school supplies.”

Achava refused to dignify that with a response. As the two of them stepped out of the bookstore, Rhodey asked, “Where to next?” Achava eyed her, and she shrugged. “I could use the company!”

So they were kindred spirits, shopping alone. Achava hesitated. They were determined to complete their tasks on their own, but…shopping with another student wasn’t the same as shopping with their mom like a little kid, right? “My name is Achava. Second year student,” they stated before abruptly heading toward the apothecary. Rhodey kept pace easily with her long legs. “And this is very serious.”

Rhodey grinned and said, “Agree to disagree.”

At the apothecary, Rhodey showed Achava how to tell which ingredients were worth the price and when to haggle. Achava blushed when they realized they would have bought sub-par supplies if Rhodey had not been there. She continued to offer advice as they went about their errands, mostly about school. She gave tips on organizing notes and memorizing a class schedule. As they talked, Achava felt less stressed about shopping and getting back to school. While purchasing robes, Rhodey grinned and pointed to a display of brightly colored hats labeled “Scholar’s Hats”.

“So fun!” She exclaimed, and Achava had to agree. Rhodey bought two. As they left, Achava said, “You didn’t have to….”

Rhodey cut them off. “The turquoise matches your kippah! Here, hang on….” Sticking her tongue out in concentration, she waved her wand a few times, and neat white embroidery appeared on the hat’s trim. “There, now the embroidery matches, too.”

Achava stared. Slowly, they put the hat on in place of their kippah, which they placed carefully in their bag. “Thank you,” they murmured. Rhodey smiled and led them on to their next stop, which was a joke shop. Achava had never been interested in prank items, but they almost bought a wand accessory which created effects–labeled “Mischief!” on the package–when attached. They avoided the temptation, since they did not need to waste their money…but they made a mental note to ask for it for their birthday.

Finally, laden with packages, they began to walk to The Cauldron Inn. Rhodey slowed down as they passed a pet store, staring at a toad in the window. “I’ve always loved toads,” she said wistfully in response to Achava’s questioning noise. “I’ve never had one, though.” She kept walking, gazing at the road beneath them. “Someday I’m gonna become an Animorphus caster and be able to turn into a toad.”

Achava noticed Rhodey seemed a bit down, but did not know what to do. They wanted to cheer her up, but how? Then, Achava got an idea. Inside the Inn, Achava tracked down their mother, who was chatting with Rhodey’s stepdad. The parents greeted the kids warmly, and Achava turned to their mother sternly.

“Mom.”

“Achava.”

“This is my friend, Rhododendron. Would it be possible,” Achava shot a glance at Rhodey’s dad, "to gift her a toad?” Out of the corner of their eye, they saw Rhodey’s face burst into a bright grin and her dad’s eyebrows shooting up in pleasant surprise. Achava’s mom happily agreed. They returned to the pet store, nearly sprinting, and Rhodey was near tears–”They’re happy tears, I’m okay!”–as they left with the toad.

“Since you got her for me, you should have partial custody!” Rhodey grinned. Achava’s face twisted into a grimace. They had nothing against toads in particular, but having a pet? Certainly not! Rhodey laughed at their expression, which then twisted into a smile.

To round out the day, the group stopped for ice cream, and Achava and Rhodey made a solemn promise (Rhodey’s mouth twitching) to meet up at school.

Looking Back Fondly on the Summer Store Releases
Server Spotlight
Written by MamaDuckie
Edited by LMNJ

For many of us here on Potterworld, the days of sweltering heat and fun-filled days at the beach are disappearing faster than you can say, ‘Appareo!’. The haunting howls of spooky season and sweater weather are just around the corner, which just so happen to be some people’s most favorite time of year. While this may be true, summer is still upon us, and a lot has happened on Potterworld in recent months, including many exciting Store Releases!

Back in June, we saw the fun and colorful City Store Release. Four fantastic colors – red, green, blue, and yellow – of Baseball Caps were added to the Store – only the most fashionable attire to keep you safe all summer long from the sun! Three feathery friends were also added – a Flamingo, a Pigeon, and a Duck, giving you the perfect companions to relax on the beach or beside the pool with. You can even take them for a stroll in the City Park Scenery close to home. However, if you want to take them on a trip, the quickest form of travel for any witch or wizard is a Warp Key, which was given a new appearance of a Telephone Box so that you can travel in true British style!

If that was not sweet enough, July gave us the Bee Store Release. For wands, we were given the excruciatingly cute Bee Wand, Bee Wand Effects, and Bee-Themed Wand Lore Additions, a handful of sweet goodies for every bee lover out there. To round off the theme, we were also given Bee Swarm Death Effects… in the hopes that you might bee more careful next time when out and about on Potterworld. If you were not sure which to pick from these new items, both the Bee Lover’s Bundle and the Sunflower Bundle can help make those hard decisions by giving you all the bees you could ever want, along with some flowers to keep them happy for months to come.

August gave us the Back to School Release, filled with new cosmetics to start the school year off with a bit of fun. The Mischief Death Effects and the Mischief Wand Effects are sure to cause a good chuckle in class. The Toad Animorphus can help you on your adventures in search for your froggy prince or princess! Both new bundles that came out will surely help you on your way to becoming the greatest witch or wizard of them all – the Scholar’s Hat Bundle and the Back to School Bundle, the perfect combinations for all aspiring legends.

Last, but certainly not least, the Jimothy Release has brought the lovable raccoon right to our very doorstep. Take him with you to study, adventure around Potterworld, or even just laze about in the library doing everything but your schoolwork. He is here for it all!

These releases are not the only things the Store has to offer, so do not forget to check out everything else that is available! From hats and pets to wands and housing scenery, there is something for everyone and always more to come! If you have any questions about the Store or even suggestions, do not hesitate to reach out to one of our amazing Store Managers, or create a new suggestion. They are here to help and value your feedback!

With that being said, I hope you managed to snag a few goodies this summer to make your time on Potterworld more magical in every way possible. You still have plenty of time to get them, and there is plenty more to look forward to. Keep an eye out for future releases!

Achoo! The Sniffingly Summer Recipe Guidebook
Lifestyle
Written by whoohoo
Edited by LMNJ

Dear readers, welcome back to another Daily Diviner Issue. In today’s Lifestyle article, we will be covering the topic of multiple summer-themed magical drinks. These are all different from your normal summer drink - like lemonade, and are maybe even spectacular!

The first one is the Sniffingly Conucko Punch. It is created by mixing multiple different fruit juices and feathers. These could be any kind of feathers from the different Conucko birds. This drink also has a side effect because of the use of these magical bird feathers, which makes you sneeze uncontrollably. You might be wondering, “Why would anyone make this drink? Who would want to sneeze uncontrollably?” Well, this drink is quite special because, depending on the type of feather, it gives the drinker different flavors that are so tasty they are worth the sneezing!

The recipe for this special drink is simple. First you need to juice three fruits. Oranges, apples, and pineapple. Once these three fruits are juiced, you can then add one feather from one of the many Conucko birds. Mix well and drink! If you made it correctly, the flavors should pop, and you should start sneezing. Now, you may be wondering what the flavors are for these drinks… Well, do not fret, I will help you find the perfect one!

Using a feather from the Conucko de Gelo, the punch will transform into a bright blue color. This drink becomes very cold without the use of ice. The taste of this drink transports your tongue to a cold beach with flavors of bananas, mangoes, and lemons! The next variation of this drink comes from using the feather of the Conucko de Fogo. This one is a great drink for those cold months, but if you like a hot drink during summer, this is the one for you. This drink immediately heats up when made and can never cool down. The color turns a dark red, and the flavor mimics cinnamon mixed with a smoky aftertaste. Be careful when harvesting a feather from this bird variant, as they are quite vicious.

The final variant of this drink comes from the feather of the Conucko de Raio. The flavor profile for this drink is indescribable for most people because it takes the flavor of what the summer sun tastes like. This drink is a golden color with swirls of glitter-like substance. It is the prettiest and most flavorful drink on the list, but also the most dangerous to make. The feather needed for this beverage is almost impossible to get safely. The golden feathers are beneath their regular feathers, and the Conucko bird uses them in defense against predators. You can be harmed by the feather before you can even harvest it. They are known for causing paralysis. So, be very careful if you plan to make this variant of Sniffingly Conucko Punch.

My personal favorite of these drinks is the Conucko de Gelo variant. Not only is it the safest to make, but it is the best for summertime to keep the heat away. Would you try any of these drinks yourself? Which one would it be? Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read this Lifestyle article and the rest of the issue! I wish you a good day and a great summer, see you next time!

Keeping the Magic Alive
Staff Highlights
Written by TheFallenPrince
Edited by Silquer

Sometimes it's easy to overlook just how much our dedicated staff put into keeping the magic alive every single day, to forget the people who helped create this wonderful server of ours. Which is why, to give you all a better idea of the incredible people behind the scenes, we highlight some of Potterworld’s most passionate team members every month so you can see a glimpse behind the scenes. That way you can see the faces and hear the stories of those who have helped shape the magical world we all love!
How long have you been on the staff team?
MamaDuckie: I joined the staff team, though not Media, back in mid-March 2020, as part of CM on the Poltergeist team. So I suppose that is about six and a half years, give or take.
Alexstrasza14: I initially joined in November 2015, though I did have two short periods where I left the team.
ForbiddenPlaces: The server hired me as a Builder back in January 2018- we were all made Staff some number of years after that. It was an automatic upgrade- I've never been officially promoted.
What made you interested in joining the staff team?
MamaDuckie: At the time, I had been playing on the server with some friends and a friend of mine - who was on the staff team - told me about a new team that had just opened applications that he thought I'd be good for. As I already really enjoyed the server, I was interested in getting more involved, so I gave it a shot.
Alexstrasza14: Back in the olden days, I was first part of the DMA team, which was a non-staff team that specifically existed to help newcomers. It was something I really enjoyed doing and I wanted to help people in even more ways. That's when I applied to staff, back when there was only Jr. Prefect as the starter role.
ForbiddenPlaces: I liked the server and I liked to build, so when the applications opened, I applied.
What are your current staff roles?
MamaDuckie: I am currently Head of Media and Public Relations.
Alexstrasza14: While I have held a position in all but one department, I am currently only a Sr. Developer.
ForbiddenPlaces: Builder Robot? Ghost-That-Haunts-the-Server-and-Builds-Things?
What type of work do you do in your positions?
MamaDuckie: Generally, I oversee the Media and PR Department, helping manage the various teams within it alongside the amazing Leads and Assistant to Head gospojken. I also take part in making decisions for the server alongside the other Head Staff and Drooble. Besides that, I still dabble in the general positions and work that each team in the Media does when needed - gotta keep my skills sharp!
Alexstrasza14: This varies quite a bit. Nowadays I mainly work more as a type of consultant. My main expertise is still privacy and cybersecurity, but I also help out in other aspects.
ForbiddenPlaces: I just build and serve as a sounding board. Occasionally I amuse people.
How much time do you approximately spend on your staff responsibilities each week?
MamaDuckie: Honestly, it really depends on the week, however, I'm constantly checking in to read everything that gets posted, not just in Media, but across all departments, just to keep myself in the loop on things going on. So I guess I'm not constantly working on a project, but I am following everything constantly instead.
Alexstrasza14: Due to the nature of my role, this varies quite a bit. At times there isn't much to do for me, and other times I spend a whole weekend on Potterworld.
ForbiddenPlaces: It varies greatly. Sometimes not so much time at all. Sometimes a lot of time.
What do you enjoy the most about your roles?
MamaDuckie: The people. I love the diversity of not just skills across Potterworld, but getting to watch as people grow while on the team and move on to not just higher roles, but taking what they learned while on the team and putting it to use in real life. I've seen many who have left the team say that they got a certain job in real life because of something they learned on the team, or that they were pursuing a certain degree or dream after dabbling in it on Potterworld. When I was younger, people used to say that you couldn't learn anything playing video games, and I have living proof that not only can you learn from it, but you can use that knowledge to shape your life.
Alexstrasza14: One thing that has always been a constant is the wonderful people you get to work with and meet. No matter how big or small, the community has always been really solid as well.
ForbiddenPlaces: The Friends. There wouldn't be much reason to be here without them.
What do you find most challenging with your roles?
MamaDuckie: The most challenging thing is my lack of ability to really learn and understand any kind of tech. I'm still not sure how I got to the position I am in without it, but my ability to do tech is so very limited, and I struggle with it a lot. Although that hasn't stopped me from using it.
Alexstrasza14: Right now I feel I am in a good position where I mainly work my expertise. Finding the time, however, can sometimes prove a little challenging.
ForbiddenPlaces: Keeping up with all the forums and workflow services, channels, meetings, ice-breaking and team-building exercises, monthly check-ins, etc. That was REALLY difficult for me because it was a total information overload and I could never keep it all straight.
What is a favourite memory you have made during your time as a staff member?
MamaDuckie: This is something that I will repeat over and over again until the end of time, but I once pulled an all-nighter with a friend who at the time was also staff. We were wandering around the castle looking for hidden chests like we did several times a week, but this night we had stayed up into the very early hours of the morning (the sun would be coming up soon). She and I found ourselves in that huge corridor of portraits and kept trying to jump into each one looking for secrets, and at one point we jumped through several back to back, and I blurted out in voice chat, "Wow! There's another big corridor of portraits!" It took us much longer than I care to admit discussing how that 'new' corridor looked exactly like the other one, and wondering how we were supposed to get back to the other one because we were lost and had now veered far off our normal course of hidden chest paths... before we realized that the 'new' corridor and the 'old' one were one in the same. I'm rather sure that we laughed for a good 30 minutes in hysterical exhaustion before we continued on our adventure. We never did find the classroom with a very specific tree in it ever again after that night either.
Alexstrasza14: There are many good memories made, both online and offline. Through staff, I've made many wonderful friends, including some I have met IRL. I think one feeling I'll never forget is teaching my very first class with a subject I made, namely Literature. It was a very exciting time for me, and all the positive feedback I received back then was delightful.
ForbiddenPlaces: The time we built Wigtown. We had tried making some weird little Medieval Fantasy villages, and this was the first mundane one. I had wanted to see more builds in that theme on the server, so it was really exciting to be a part of it. [Canadian] Dani and I started bouncing ideas off each other and made up a whole bunch of stories about the place. What a good time.
Is there anything more you would like to say to those reading this interview?
MamaDuckie: Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone! I joined the Potterworld team as a Poltergeist with hopes of becoming part of Daily Diviner because writing is one of my passions. But over the years I learned how to render, create graphics, and even have dabbled in creating models and doing tech - albeit badly, simply because they looked interesting to me. If I hadn't of tried, I wouldn't have known I could have fun with the more visual arts side of Media. Not only can I now help with these things in Media, but I actually enjoy playing around with them outside of Potterworld as a hobby. I never thought I could do it, but decided to step outside that comfort zone and give them a chance, which worked out in the end. So never be afraid to try something new, because you never know what you may find out about yourself in the process!
Alexstrasza14: A big thank you to the community for being so wonderful. You lost The Game.
ForbiddenPlaces: Thanks for being my friends and making this server so much more than just a Theme Park.

It’s always a treat to have an excuse to chat with some of Potterworld’s most remarkable team members. I love learning more about the team I'm lucky to be a part of, because at the core, we all share the same goal: to make Potterworld as enchanting and special as it can be.

A big thank you to everyone who graciously took the time to be part of this, and to all of you reading, thank you for your interest and for getting to know our wonderful team. I hope you enjoyed learning more about the incredible people working behind the scenes to keep the magic alive in Potterworld!
